I’m going to replace the tuners on my Mex Tele. I’ve found some Fender locking tuners going for a reasonable price. Anybody have any opinions on how Fender ones compare to Gotoh/Sperzel/Schaller locking tuners?

Many webstores still sell the Fender staggered locking tuners "made in Germany" - that means they are Schallers.
The price difference between Ping and those traditional brands actually isn't big...

As far as staying in tune goes, even the cheapest tuning machines do the job unless they're mechanically broken.
That said, if I replace tuners on any guitar/bass, I use Schaller or Grover - for tradition/feelings/stubborness etc...

Both the standerd "fender"ping and the Schaller will fit US deluxe and std strats without modification in the respect they are two pin types.
If you have the std two pin fender tuners it should be easy.
If you don't some modification may be necessary. :D

The Ping locking tuners are just fine.
The only reason for fitting them is that they make string changing a breeze.
If you have tuning stability problems get the problem sorted out - locking tuners won't fix the problem.

I’d have thought that replacing the tuners on a MIM would be the first place to start when trying to solve a tuning stability problem? It’s a fixed bridge… I guess the nut may affect it but would have thought it more likely to be the cheaper tuners you get on MIMs. The tuning stability isn’t terrible by the way, it’s just my Strat (which I believe is Korean and made in 1981) will stay in tune all day long no matter what crazy bends you do on it. That’s what I’m used to, and the MIM Tele isn’t quite there

Think about classical instruments; they use tuning pegs...

Assuming that the tuning machines are clean, lubed (if possible) and properly tight (if there are adjustment screws - or bottom nuts), the usual culprits for bad tuning stability are old strings, strings wound loose/bad/wrong on the posts, nut (slots worn, tight, loose, unlubed... And a trem/vibrato of course, if a guitar has one.
Then string guides, saddles, and sometimes the neck is loose (neck joint screws...) or bendy (on many thin neck guitars, big relief with a loose truss rod just doesn't give enough support)...

Even in the oldest & cheapest guitars (wrecks...) I've set up (I'll repeat): even the cheapest tuning machines do the job unless they're mechanically broken.

Fair points. Well I’ve already ordered the new tuners. I guess I could also apply some lube to the saddles and nut, see if that helps. I’ve already got some string lube, I’ll give it a try

I've owned Fender locking tuners and I don't like them because they are too heavy and basically don't do anything.
Oh yeah, that's right, they lock.....

... and they tune. Don't forget that part.

So in a way ... they are very aptly named and they do do something.
They do exactly what the name implies.
They tune and they lock.

I like the from-the-factory locking tuners on my 2014 AmDlx Strat. My only (fairly minor) complaint is that I wish there were a little more friction on the threads to give it a more "precision" feel and make it less likely to accidentally loosen the lock inadvertently (which I did once when tuning up live but managed to salvage the string).

But if I were retrofitting an existing guitar, I would probably shop around to see if there were locking tuners I liked better.
