These days I don't have my old Blues Band -- largely because I stick with the concept of One Person One Guitar and I perform solo electric blues a la John Lee Hooker's sparse style as well as Lightning Hopkins stuff solo stuff, and with it also comes questions. It's usually based in clean tones with a bit of thickening and a blues/swamp feel. Bass guitar and rhythm is my thumbpick on the low E string and fingers/nails on the higher strings for fills and riffs.

With the new Tele I am thinking of changing some pickup thingies - The neck pickup that came with the guitar is fine. The bridge pickup needs a semi-humbucker tone, I think, a bit more oomph. I was pointed towards a Seymour Duncan 59 for Tele in the bridge position and played in the middle position I get a nice gruff tone.

My question has come back to the neck pickup with will meet my playing sound needs and work well with the Duncan 59.

I joined this forum for one reason -- to try and hear about suggested pickups Telecaster users would recommend or suggest based on the junk I wrote above. I've picked up $78 guitars that sound good to me all the way up and would like a cheap/affordable/appropriate help. Bless your pea-picking hearts for any help.

Hi & sorry for the late answer - forum has a first post delay policy.

Your question is the type that's the hardest to answer, because we're dealing with feelings instead of facts...

But here's some possibilities, and if that cheap/affordable is a big factor, lay low & wait for a suitable ebay (etc.) deal...

SD seems keen to pair the 59 with their Vintage Stack.
If you remain on the Fender selection, maybe a Twisted Tele would do the trick - or a Nocaster.
DiMarzio's Twang King..?
And then again, there are many custom pickup makers who would listen to that "junk" and then like magic recommend a pickup which would fit perfectly. "Can't go wrong with Lollars", like I've said before.

It would help if you'd describe what you now don't like about the neck pickup.

First you said it sounded fine and felt no urge to change it.

And then after putting the Little'59 in the bridge you say you get "a nice gruff sound in the middle position".

So are you looking for a neck pickup that sounds similar to the stock one but is noiseless/hum-canceling?

Or do you want a different sounding neck pickup?

We'll just be telling you our random favorite neck pickups if we don't know what sort of sound you're looking for.

The Albert Collins model uses a Fender Texas Tele bridge single-coil and a full-sized Duncan '59 neck humbucker.

Really? A full size JB as a neck pickup? To go with a Little'59 bridge pickup? For John Lee Hooker style solo blues guitar?

One option:
S/D
SH-PG1n
Pearly Gates (neck)
Mates well with many bridge buckers.

If that’s too angry the Jazz might be a good choice.
It’s fairly bright and relatively low output.
Should be similar to a Fender pup but with twin coils.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
