Duchossier just says the 6-saddle ashtray eas introduced "in the mid '70s". And it appeared first on the Tele Custom.

Most if not all '73s came from the factory with 3-saddle ashtrays.

Any other opinions on whether the body has been refinished?

That has far more impact on value than replaced pots or bridges.

Let me start by saying that's a really cool guitar. Lots of mojo and history. And since it appears to have been "well-loved" over the decades I expect it sounds great. Not a "case queen" that's perfect because it didn't sound great enough to inspire people to play it.

If it had been chemical stripped or heat gun stripped -- without changing the body shape at all -- that would be 50%. The oversanding and pocket alterations hurt value even more.

Also, look at how paper-thin the fretboard is at the heel end of the neck. Doesn't look like typical pick wear. Would need to examine the whole fretboard closely. They may have just leveled pick wear at the end of the board, or it may have been a bad leveling of the whole board during a refret.

Sorry, I don't keep up with current vintage pricing. Just the general rules of how changes affect value.

High value to low: mint original finish, worn original, Fender factory refinish (for '50s&'60s guitars), era-correct refinish, non-era-correct refinish, refinish that altered the wood.

High value to low: all original parts, damaged parts replaced with correct vintage parts, incorrect parts that can be replaced with correct vintage parts, changed parts that involved new screw holes or routing.

High value to low: excellent original frets, slightly worn or leveled original frets, perfect refret, bad refret.

Your location also affects its value. In the US and Japan, the difference between "mint" and "player's grade" is staggering. In parts of the world where the vintage market isn't as thriving and there are fewer mint examples, the value difference isn't quite as huge.

Fender made a lot of Teles in the '70s, and that was only 40 years ago. There are a lot more minty '70s than clean preCBS Teles, so condition is super important for '70s.

Why the heff did you delete all your posts?
You can't 'close' a topic, or delete the answers you've gotten, so it just leaves the topic crippled.
And this kind of web conversations/ponderings help others in similar situations, too.
