The next best thing to a Tele, is Heartbreakers' Mike Campbell's 1978 Single Coil, Gold Top Gibson LP.
You gotta love the Fender Pick under the toggle switch ring molding.
My guess is that a couple of the pots are just for show.

The Single Coil Gibson sounds so single coil great at the beginning of "Breakdown" at the 14:30 mark in the video below.
At about the 28:40 Mark, after you skate past a bunch of VH1 ADs, Mike Campbell dons the real thing.
I love these kids called "The Heartbreakers".
....And that folks, is Rock 'N Roll !!!

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers 06/08/1978 BBC Televison - Old Grey Whistle Test
(What a drag - no Flash).

Big fan of Mike Campbell, right here.
I like him for the same reasons I like most of my fave guitarists.
He's not a flashy showboat.
His playing is tasteful and everything he does is for the benefit of the music rather than simply to call attention to himself.
I hate wankers with a passion.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

The Great Tom Petty Has Passed. RIP.
I first saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in The Stanley Theater in July, 1978.
I last saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in The Wells Fargo Center on July 1, 2017.
