Hi,

I am working on an unfinished Fender neck.
As described in the title of this topic, it's a Fender 72 Custom Left Handed but there are a couple of things to do on it !

1 / install the micro-tilt (screws + circle metal plate) at the bottom of the neck
2 / drill an equivalent circle hole inside of the neck pocket of my telecaster body
3 / install the micro-tilt (screws + circle metal plate) in this newly drilled hole
needs to apply varnish or a transparent finish on it
4 / find a way to make them fit together
5 / add the Fender bullet truss road "thing" at the top of this neck.
6 / apply on the neck a transparent finish or a varnish
7 / wait I don't know how long until the neck finish is dry
8 / mount the neck and voila \o/

I started to look at this topic viewtopic.php?f=7&t=100983&p=1149709&hilit=tilt+tele#p1149709 but i spent more time watching Fender videos about micro-tilt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ekS4KBMpVY)

If you have already did something like that let me know.
I will add pictures tomorrow :)

If it doesn't have the bullet truss rod now, it's got something else. Installing a bullet nut might not be possible (e.g. on Bi-Flex™ truss rods) or be real difficult (= require drilling the neck lengthwise to remove the plastic plug and/or to not split the neck with the bullet.

As you see (on my posts in the link you provided), I'm not a fan of the Micro-Tilt™ invention; shims do it better. Installing one should be just accurate woodworking - provided that you don't drill into the truss rod at that end.

That is going to be quite an experience for me !
I bought the neck recently and this is the 1st time I saw this micro-tilt feature. On used guitars, I found shim placed when I removed bolt or screws. It always looks like amateur work but if it does the job, that's fine.

To come back to this Micro-Tilt thing (I haven't yet read entirely your post jmattis), the seller told me exactly what I had to buy. She did not mentioned to me to install the truss road bar. It is inside apparently and yesterday when I placed the bullet it looked going pretty well.
I need a hex wrench to "screw" it a bit deeper.

Another for me about buying this neck was it was an opportunity for me to learn about working on a neck, the neck is in very good condition, I should say "mint" as English spoken people uses to say about instrument parts....and of course I'm lefty so spare part are rare. It's like looking for a spare 24" lefty neck... terribly rare.

I forgot to add the action where I'll have to drill thin holes for Fender tuners !

I noticed I will maybe about to softly sand the neck before I apply a varnish on it.

That maybe a stupid question but ... does it affect guitar sound quality to use a micro tilt neck on a guitar body not routed with micro tilt hardware ? It's just supposed to be a 'plus' for the guitar player in terms of settings, correcto ?

Aha, I got you wrong - the bullet truss rod nut was just missing, you didn't change anything...

On the tilt mechanism: I don't think anyone could tell a sound difference between a shimmed neck or Micro-Tilt™ adjusted neck on the same guitar.

You can read the Fender description of the Micro-Tilt™ here: http://www2.fender.com/experience/tech- ... icro-tilt/

BTW, an original 1972 Telecaster Custom might have a three bolt neck and a "FENDER MICRO NECK ADJUST PAT 3550496" stamped neck plate...

Interesting :)

To me this is just an unfinished part that is supposed to be Genuine Fender, but that could also be (sadly) a copy or a licensed neck but licensed product are stamped with a clear message saying it is a copy.

By original, do you mean from the 70's ? Genuine ? or both ?

I need to improve my understanding from English to French :P

I mean the real mccoys, build start 45 years ago in 1972. Like this one sold @reverb. (The Mocha Brown color is typical for the seventies, and maybe the most hated Fender color. You can take that as a hint for your project's body color - either way you want...)
Those guitars also have the original Wide Range Humbuckers, not to be confused with the reissues of this millennium.

The new neck you have... Not many licensed makers leave their products totally unmarked, and the same goes with Fender. But Partscasters are fine as long as you don't label them Fender...

The language barrier may also be mea culpa, I have a habit of that...

This neck is coming from a shop in Corona, California. I don't know if this town looks familiar to you or regarding Fender  :D

I did not try to dig to learn more about it. For example : if it's a defect one for x or y reasons, if it's a gift, or something else.

Thanks for the information you're giving me.
I see a lot of Reissue things, could be necks, guitar bodies, complete guitars, pickups, etc. but again, I've just understood it's like a new edition.
Well in fat a what we call in French "réédition" but it is conceived with more recent component (finish, hardware, wiring, etc.). In the end it tries to keep the "spirit" of the brand.

Where I got your point is, it's like night and day between the original "Wide Range Humbuckers" and the new sh*t to say that in a vulgar way :/
If I have correctly understood it, that's why when I rebuilding 'vintage Fender' I am only focusing my research on original parts in decent condition (mint, excellent ,very good, good or fair). Clean or not.

This "Telecaster" left handed body I got is a Custom 72 made of Basswood.
I wanted to bring it to a guy who has a "wood business" about a kilometer from where I live to have his point of view as a wood professional "artisan".
I'm not fan of "Relic" guitars, but depending on which finish product I'll apply on the body, it will looks brand new or a bit used

The name WRH is about the only thing that's the same with original/reissue ones, the whole construction/design is totally different. The originals have the best of both worlds, hum cancelling and fatness with single coil like clarity. I'm not calling the new ones names, but they are 'just your ordinary humbuckers'.

On terms, Fender's "reissue" varies a lot - plus, in many cases that term is not used in Fender (marketing etc.) lingo at all, although everyone else uses it (like with MIJ "reissue" guitars). And not even Fender's AVRIs are (nor are they even trying to be) exact copies of the originals.
But the point I'm trying to make in these posts is, be aware of what the model of a project is; originals and reissues differ.
Maybe your project could be described as hommage as well as réédition. 8)

I spent 2 hours in painting (finish) and woodwork department from DIY department store to find paint, oild and the proper tools for this project and others.
I confess i made a small then big digression because I check finish for each bodies I do have at home and I found a way to do a very sober finish for the semi hollow lefty Jazzmaster I have to do !

Well this Tele is going to have like an old vintage yellow finish ! I will do it with a paintbrush and then depending on how it will be once dry I'll sand it a bit to apply a satin or gloss finish.
Shame on me I have found a product to finish this neck :(
I will ask my luthier maybe he has something in stock for me.
