I have seen various knobs for Telecasters available on the net. Some are specified as having 1/4 inch hole. Others are specified as having 6mm hole. Some even say they will fit both size shafts because they will come supplied with a little sleeve that adapts from one size to the other.

And I can also see that 1/4 inch = 6.35 mm, so obviously there is a slight difference.

I am wondering just which kinds of Tele will have the 1/4 inch shaft and which kinds will have the 6mm shaft? Is it something to do with USA verses MIM verses Squire?

And is this also what they are talking about when they say metric or fits metric... like 6mm shaft is metric type?

Any info and help will be much appreciated.

Thanks!!

As far as I know, it's an imperial vs. metric , "US" vs. "Import" thing.
The problem is, one can pretty safely assume that US-made instruments are imperial, but on made-in-elsewhere instruments (Fender and Squier) both types can be found.

So, it's wise to check every time before ordering online. Many (not saying all, or even most...) Fenders/Squiers have a parts list/service diagram available, so one doesn't even have to measure.

0.35mm is a pretty small difference in diameter.
A millimeter is already pretty small.
It's smaller than 1/16".

0.35mm gives you 0.17mm on either side (or all the way around).
0.17mm is roughly 0.007"
Seven thousandths of an inch on both sides of the shaft.
That's not much of a difference.
I'm guessing that if there is actually a difference in the drilled hole size there is more than that much room just for clearance and either pot will work in either guard.
Even if they aren't the same, enlarging the hole isn't going to make the guard useless to accept smaller posts.
I honestly wouldn't worry about it unless you have absolutely no idea how enlarge a hole.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

But then there are the .235"/5,97mm pots...

But seriously, on Fenders/Squiers the difference is usually meaningless ("usually" = except if it's a kid's first guitar with 1/4" pot shafts and the mail order gold skull knobs are 6 mm, and the kid/his dad/mom really doesn't know what to do).
On knurled Gibsons, one has to know the teeth count ...
