I just got a Fender American Professional Telecaster and it sounds off to me. The pickups are really far from the strings yet fully extended. I can't find any info on the setup for the V-Mod Single-coil pickups. As it came to me with the Bridge pickup is set to 7 - 10 MM. All the info I can find on Fender pickups has them set around 1.6 mm to 2.4 mm so I'm just guessing but I think 7 - 10mm is a bit to low... ha!

Thank you :)

Well I would like to move the bridge pickup closer to the strings but the pickup is up all the way now and 1/3' from the strings 8.5 mm. all the other fender pickups are around 2 mm give or take a mm. I don't really want to mess with the saddles until I know how far down I need to move them... I was thinking that there would be a set amount of space between the pickup and the strings. like there are for other pickups. It must be published someplace...

How much experience on guitar setups do you have? If not much, it's best to let a good pro do it.
There's a distinct order to do things in a setup, usually based on what adjustment affetcs what.
One example: action (= string height = saddles) is adjusted before the pickup height.

If you DIY, here's some reading. The process advances in this order - and when you get to pickup height, you can start the V-Mod height from Vintage/Standard/Noiseless/whatever recommendations, but after that I agree with stratmangler, experiment.
https://support.fender.com/hc/en-us/art ... -properly-

BTW, an initial setup for a new guitar done by a good pro includes a lot more than what's in the Fender setup guides. The price is IMHO money well spent.

It does sound as though there's something amiss with the guitar setup.
If you look in the setup guide https://support.fender.com/hc/en-us/art ... -properly- it says that pickup height should a lot closer than you've managed.

Any chance of some pictures?
Not just of the pickup height, but of string action/sighting along the body & neck too.

This guide is on how to post piccies viewtopic.php?f=2&t=52777 , just substitute botophucket with something like https://postimages.org/

So I'm just guessing here but the V Mods are going to be classified as Vintage pickups? Thank you for the link! :) EDIT: I guess I should explain... I needed the spec for reasons relating to a bad setup.... and Not wanting to rant here... I just needed what I needed... Peace!

Sorry if you felt I was questioning your skill level. That was not the purpose, but the part I quoted sounded so weird it made me suspicious.

If your action is right, but the pickup(s) is(are) as high as it(they) will go and still way far from the strings: how's the neck angle?
And, in the good ole days before manufacturer's setup instructions, a thumb rule was to set the neck pup (top) level with the fretboard to begin with - does your neck pup come even close?

No worries.. lol I knew you didn't know me.. lol The swaddles are way too high and the action is good. So you can understand what needs to be done... That's why I'm covering my butt. Who knew if maybe these new V Mods needed to be 8.5 mm from the strings or not. lol The online store where I got the guitar is going to pay for a setup by my Luther... It's all good but it should not have went that way in the first place... peace!
Edit: I should say my Luther will inspect it as well just to make sure it's all good to go... :)

Saddles high, action as it should, pickups low...
Still sounds to me like the neck angle is wrong.

When you get it fixed, I'd sure like to know what was wrong.

Yep sure sounds strange...
The vmods are alnico combination.
Don't forget that height measurement is with the string depressed at the last fret. :D
