Hello,

I recently purchased a telecaster that was advertised as a Mexican Telecaster with no additional qualifiers on Craigslist. The price was great and I have wanted a telecaster for a while, so I bought it. Based on the pictures posted, I knew it wasn't a MIM standard telecaster because of the rosewood fretboard, so I sent the serial number to Fender for verification. The response from fender was "We don't have that serial number in our system" which isn't a great sign, but I am not too worried about it - the thing plays great.

I am really interested in figuring out where the neck is from and exactly how much of a Partscaster this is and where those parts came from. When I open up the electronics panel, there is a barcode that says "BODY 50's TELE ASH SBS SND (MEX)" which has been lacquered/glossed over with no signs of sanding or anything, so I have no reason to believe the body is a fake. The seller has it wired as an Esquire at the moment, with an EMG-RT in the bridge position and a random unidentifyable pickup in the next that isn't connected into anything, but also included the pickups that "came out of the guitar" - which appear (to my laymen's eyes and a lot of researching) to be 62 re-issues?

The neck looks to me like either a Classic 60s, but again, I am not sure. The fact that the serial number came back from the fender factory as "Not in their system" is what poses the majority of the questions I have. Is there a chance this is a fake or an aftermarket neck with the serial numbers and logo placed on the headstock? There is no indication of sanding or scratching and the serial numbers appear to be either under or completely flush with the lacquer.

If anyone can help with the identification of this guitar and the respective parts, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

You might find a clue in the neck pocket, either on the back portion of the neck where it meets the body or the butt(very end) of the neck. Otherwise, your pics aren't enough info to identify the neck itself if the serial number was not in the system. The decal is way wrong along w/ some other indicators to be a Fender neck or a replacement from an authorized dealer.

Thanks for the response! I replaced the pickups tonight and in the process took the neck off to see what info was in the pocket and on the heel. The neck heel has what appears to be a burnt in stamp that says "Fender Genuine Part", so it appears to be a replacement neck. It's also date stamped "Oct 4 2016". I didn't know Fender put serial numbers on replacement necks. Interesting...

In the body cavity there was a stamp that looked like a date stamp or a serial number - something like 003141990. I didn't snap a picture of this because apparently I lack foresight...

Your pics don't show in Fender forum, because you don't have the pic address, ending in ".jpg".

As far as my earlier statement regarding decal, not so accurate. sorry
The headstock and decal match either of these two models:
classic player baja 60's or the AVRI 58
However the AVRI has a skunk stripe, so I believe yours is a replacement Classic Player Baja 60's neck.
Nice looking guitar that I would call a Fender Telecaster.
As far as the neck stamp, not sure who made it.

Thanks for the response! I appreciate the information. I was leaning towards the neck being a replacement for the Baja 60's, or the Classic 60's series. Not sure who makes the neck either - hoping it came from the Fender factory (which would account for the serial number maybe?). It fits like a glove and plays like a dream, so Im definitely a fan of the guitar. My first Fender instrument, probably wont be my last.
