Been researching this for a few days but not finding a great deal of info. Bought what I hope is an original 1972 telecaster. It has the hand tag, but having trouble dating it. Mainly not understanding what the 55412 in the upper left means. Seems incomplete as there no date code writing in that block. Any help from those who have u]reasearched and understand these early tags.

Tag may come from any guitars, we need to see numbers on body and neck.

No tag help here(I believe its just a random stock inspection tag# w/o any specific info to the guitar type), but the potentiometers are definitely not original. Picks of the back of the pickups would be nice.

The pots are 1966 vintage correct? Is t it true that fende used those pots up until 1973 or so?

Those pots migh have been manufactured in 1966, but Fender used them a lot later. I don't think anyone has a sure answer when was the latest year/date.

In general, the guitar looks legit to me. And looks nice, too.
Edit: That second string tree is probably added at some point, not original.

Although they may be leftovers from 1966, what are the chances of Fender using 1Meg volume/tone pots? I've never seen any reference that would lead me to believe they did.
And it is a fine looking guitar.

Not that I know much and sorry to be contradictory but I believe 1Meg after 69 the back to 250k 81 just another Fender quirk! :D

No issues here  ; I had never heard or read anywhere so I "assumed" 250k or 500k pots were always the norm. But given the time period you indicate 69-81, I suppose anything was possible.

There was the "probably" because I'm not sure - just that one string tree is the rule, two the exception.

Tele arrived today. Fell in love with it already. Was born Jan 1972, always wanted a 72 tele in nice condition and with the Jan 72 neck it's perfect. Really great shape all the way around. Have not weighed it yet, but it's very light weight.

Whether all original or not (still hoping it is) it's a keeper and sounds awesome. Added more pics of the breakdown to the album. Thanks for everyone's info. Took a bit of a risk on it with my limited knowledge of early fenders. It very happy with it.

That hand tag red marking is still bugging me though.
