I have a Tele '58 resiisue and love it. I'd like to try something different and develop some different sound approaches. I like the feel of a Tele but would like the sound of a Humbucker in there. I am considering one of the '72 Custom reissues and maybe also a Plus - partly because I'm a big Jonny Greenwood fan.

Any advice/experience out there?

Thanks

Not much worth as advice, but IMHO worth noting.
The original Customs had the original Wide Range Humbuckers, the current Classic Series '72s have the WRH Reissue pickups.
Jonny Greenwood's Tele Plus has Lace Sensors, the Modern Player Tele Plus has MP-series pickups.

What I meant is, be aware that the old pickups are very different from the new ones - designwise, qualitywise, soundwise.

What's your budget on this, might help in giving more accurate tips?

I had a Plus Deluxe.
Interesting guitar with several unique features not normally found on a Tele.
It was a fabulous conversation starter.
As a player, it left me wanting.

The tone was the problem.
Honk, honk, honk, honk, honk.
That was the only noise it knew how to make.
We have members here who love Lace Sensors.
I am not one of them.
Not by a damned sight.

I think you can guess what MY recommendation would be regarding the Plus.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Different strokes for different folks; viewtopic.php?f=7&t=107035
But that only honking makes me wonder - somehow it doesn't seem to fit any Radiohead music I remember.

To the OP, that budget gives almost unlimited possibilities.
A custom instrument maybe - get a used Tele with all your favorite body/neck/hardware specs (or that Classic '72 if you prefer new) and have the pickups & electronics upgraded.

While you check the '72 and MP, you could also test the AmPro Tele Deluxe with Shawbuckers; fits the budget and the Shawbuckers might be interesting.
(As a side note; I wonder why Fender didn't include a coil split option in the wiring like in the the Shawbuckered AmPro Strat HH.)

That's really helpful - in the UK it's really hard to find a Plus V1 anywhere. I need to hear one, otherwise I need another Tele with humbuckers. Tried a Shawbucker the other day and didn't like the wide ranging humbucker sound. The FMT and Baha sounded better to me - I prefer that boosted mid/low mid.

I agree - Radiohead don't honk to me but I guess everyone finds a way to get the most out of their guitar and Jonny is one of the best at that. As I said I didn't really like the Shawbucker sound but your advice on customising a guitar is good.
