Hey all!

I love this forum, what a great community!

So I have come across a 1980's left handed Fender Telecaster. I am looking forward to buying this, but wanted some of you experts to check it out first for me. It is in great condition, but I have noticed the headstock doesn't say "Telecaster". It just has the fender logo? Is this common for the 80's guitars? All previous ones I have seen said telecaster. The seller has told me that it is an 85, MIJ guitar.

I have attached the images! Thank you all for looking/verifying.

Looks legit to me, a '62 Custom Telecaster MIJ. 1985 would also be OK.
Usually those have the "TELECASTER", but on left hand models a missing sticker is within possibility.
Neck pocket/heel stamps etc. and wiring might tell more.
And: the above is not an expert statement, just my opinion.

BTW, photobucket is so full of pop-ups, ads and glitches I'd recommend a) posting pics straight to the forum, and b) using some other pichost.

+1, that's what I was thinking as well.

along w/ the neck date/stamps should help to confirm authenticity.

The pickups are not original, which might mean other electrical components have been changed as well.

Thanks for the responses! :)
I think it's legit also, the guy is including a hard case and the original pickups with it. The guitar has made in Japan stamped on the base of the neck, no fender stamp on the metal plate on the back. Haven't taken the neck off to confirm serial, but from the photos it looks pretty legitimate.

Any reason a missing telecaster sticker would be on a left and not a right handed? Were the lefty guitars made to order? Or mass produced?

Anyhow, $700 for the guitar and case. That sounds about right?

Thanks again all.

This is how I've understood, not sure if I'm right:
The Japanese lefty guitars were originally only on special order. Sometime (about late eighties to early nineties) they began making special lefty models in "mass production" (small mass, though...). Large guitar shops could have those in the selection, but smaller ones ordered them if someone was buying - the 'minimum order' rules weren't largely used those days. All (?) models could still be ordered as lefties. I haven't found the 62 Custom LH as a "mass" model, so I'm guessing it's always been custom made.
And I'm thinking a missing sticker is more likely to (not?) appear on a custom order guitar than on a production series model.

On the price: MIJ price level is very dependant on which part of the world you live in. My eyebrows stay still for that 700; in my 'hood that's not a bargain but not robbery either.

Some of the stickers depend on the contour of the guitar headstock, which will be different for a sinister version. The order would also differ, so you can't just flip them or you'll have a Telecaster Fender instead of a Fender Telecaster. So my guess is that skipping the problematic stickers saved time and costs.
