Hello, I bought a brand new Telecaster Reissue about 1991/92. I am not sure if it was technically called a "'50's Reissue" or a "'52 Reissue". I believe that it was made in Mexico. It was Sunburst and came with a flat-black pickguard. I loved that guitar and sold it about 18 months after buying it new. Can someone please send me specific info on this model (year, name, etc.) so I can search for a new used one? I'd love to find the same year with the same look. Thanks.

OK, since nobody answered with a this is your guitar reply, I'll start.

There are no MIM Reissues. That guitar could be just 50('s), or Classic 50, or something else.
If you bought it about 1991/1992, it was either new, which gives the model year. If it was used, you should try to frame the timeline a bit more accurate.

Getting a replacement is, IMHO, only a problem of pinpointing what you want.
Sunburst Teles - that's a basic Tele color from almost any year. Those with a black pickguard can be found - if not, a pickguard swap is easy. Then you go on with: Was it bound? Radius? Neck profile? Etc.

Or just get a very good guitar. If your budget stretches, get an American Vintage Tele. A cheaper alternative; check out the MIJ's - they're not Reissues, either, but they're real nice guitars with vintage specs.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply.
- Yes, I did buy the guitar new from a shop
- Yes, I remember that it was referred to as a "50's something or other"
- I do know that it was not American made
- I do know that the pick guard was flat black

I understand that I can buy many guitars old and new that may be like this one. I understand that I could spend $500 to $3,000 on something that looks similar and plays the same or better. My search is really focused on the fact that I miss this particular, specific guitar and that I am in search of it or its sister and want to buy that one.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

You've heard of the expression, "like trying to find a needle in a haystack"?

Consider it lost and don't waste another moment of regret.
Just find one you like and buy it.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I'm not sure its totally out of the realms of reality to find a specific guitar from. It would probably take a while, and obviously you're not going to find your old guitar. Trying to find a reference of the fender product line ups for those years is a good place to start. You need to establish what it was.

Thanks for that tip.

I am new to the world of searching for historical instruments... Can you recommend a source that may help me narrow down my search?

I'd start with google (or similar web search engine if you prefer other). Or place a wanted add in ebay (& such). Reverb.com is one option.

There's not much info on the early MIMs; not nearly as much as MIJs or MIAs. They're generally sort of regarded as the cheap alternative, so there isn't a fan site where old brochures etc. could be found.
Earliest serials according to support pages are MN0 for 1990-1991, MN1 for 1991-1992 (etc.), so those are what you're looking for. The sunburst color narrows your search a bit. The 50 (/50s, /50's /52 etc.) hints that it had a maple fretboard. I'm not aware of any fifties series MIM Tele from those times, so probably a "Standard" if it had no specialities.

I'd still say an easy way out would be a TL52 from Japan in sunburst. Except for the neck radius (7.25" for the MIJ, guessing 9.5" for the MIM), my imaginary wager would be on that you wouldn't know the difference.

BTW, Being curious: don't you have one single photo of the mystery MIM?
And good luck, you'll need it.

Thanks so much for your great reply. I will continue my search using your tips. And yes, I do have some photos I took of the guitar back in the day. I do not have access to them now but will post them as soon as I do.
