Happy Easter, I have the opportunity to buy a 1953 Esquire, however it if far from all original. It had a refin about 30 years ago, it has been re-fretted (which many older guitars require) and it has repro tuners instead of the originals. Has a case from 1954. I know that all original, these could fetch up to 30K USD. Would it be at least worth half, in its current state? Thanks.

no, this one is a private sale locally. Any thoughts on a price with the items changed that I mentioned?

The seller is asking for too much.
You can pick up an unmolested '54 for around $15000, and that's from a dealer.

The one I can buy, with refin, refret, retuners is around 9.7K USD, 13K Canadian.

That's a decent price as long as the body is all original other than the re-paint and the neck is more playable now after a re-fret. The tuners and the re-paint are the biggest part of the price deductions imo. As well the case being a non-original but an era correct "Fender" case is a plus to the price not a minus. You mentioned Canadian dollars, so the assumption that the guitar didn't come w/ an original hard case could be made.

As long as you are confident w/ its pedigree and you like the way the guitar sounds and plays and can afford the money w/o creating any issues for you or your family, go for it. You only live once!

mannymann, if you can, take it apart and check it out real good before you make a decision.

If it were me, and I've had experience with this sort of thing before, I would by a Fender Custom Shop '51 Nocaster. You can buy a new one for a third of what they're asking for the '53.

You could buy two (2) Teles from the Fender Custom Shop, or custom order a very special guitar for that price.
If the used Tele isn't original, and doesn't have unique provenance, it's not worth anything near 9.7K USD in my opinion
Go Custom Shop.
