Hey guys,

I bought a Fender USA Professional Standard Telecaster HS which I absolutely love. I've never been a Fender person but when I played this guitar I fell in love. It's my understanding though that it's not the typical Tele sound which is fine.

This is the one I have

Help with backup tele

I wanted to buy a backup Tele that sounded as similar to the USA Pro HS Tele as possible but not as expensive.
Out of these two, which would you recommend?

1. Fender Modern Player Tele Plus (new)

OR

2. Fender classic 72 Telecaster Custom (2007 model)

I can't decide but want something that has a similar tone to the USA pro HS tele model. I love the amount of grit I can get out of that guitar with it still sounding crisp and clear.

Thanks for your help.

First: sorry, your post was a victim of the new member delay for me, so answering quite late...

IMHO, it isn't a 'which model' question, it's a do your homework one.
(BTW, two similar model guitars don't always play exactly the same.)

Play your US Pro, then the backup axe candidate, with your usual sound chain (amp, pedals, their settings). Try different switch/vol/tone settings on the guitar and listen if you get sound close enough to the original.

I'd go w/ option #1 only because it would be easier to transition into the same configuration as the Pro.

Swapping to the Gen 4 pickups and wiring would be the only mod necessary, although you should probably remove the mid pup and change pickguard to get looking/sounding close to the Pro.

Although not positive you may have to deepen the bridge position routing slightly.

The #2 model, in order to put a Gen 4 bridge bucker would require a replacement bridge as well as all the above. While you could just keep the bridge and neck positions the same, the sound would be a bit different from the opposite positions. The bridge, bridge pup plate and scale length are the big factors impeding you getting close to the tone of the Pro.

Sorry for the late reply and thanks for the advice guys. I went with option 1 in the end and it's an amazing guitar. Love it.

I am actually building my own tele now and wanted to know if anyone has detailed specs of the pickups used on the USA PRO tele HS?

Basically, I wanted to found out the resistance output for each pickup (neck and bridge). I know they are vintage output but wanted to check specifics if anyone knows.

Also, I know Teles control pots are normally 250k but is that the same for the USA Pro HS model?

Thanks again.

I would go with the first one.
Couple of reasons.

1) You intend it to be a back-up for your other Tele so the bridge bucker will better suit that need than a neck bucker.

2) With the addition of the middle pup it will be more versatile.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
