All good amps, but you may also want to check out the SuperSonic 22. It gives you the extra versatility of an effects loop (not included in the DRRI, PRI or BJr) and the Burn Channel expands the tonal pallet.

Amen, the supersonic is my favorite amp right now! Wish I had one. And the clean channel is based on the DRRI platform

You didn't mention a budget, so I suggest a good used Fender Champ or Vibro Champ.
Preferably a blackface or silverface model 1964-1973.
You should be able to find a decent used one for about 750-900.
If you have a little more money to spend, maybe look at a new 57 re-issue Champ about 1000.

For a small room Champs are really fine, could be used to record or could be mic'd if you start playing gigs.
Alone they may not cut through w/ a full band.

Good luck w/ your new Tele and soon to be tube amplifier.

Very much IMHO:
This 'which amp' question is actually very difficult to answer. What kind of sound universe are you looking for? And what's the budget (as sfceric64 already asked)? How quiet do you need to be when you play? Are you looking for a home practice amp, or are you going to gig with it, too? And with your background, do you want to "master the Tele" first, or start learning guitar/amp cooperation (a responsive amp reflects how you pluck strings - that skill is needed, but maybe not in the beginning) right away?

The suggestions given are very good amps. But many of them are LOUD for sensitive neighbors - even the 4W Vox, just like other low watt tube amps.
If you feel it's enough at this point, the headphone amps (e.g. Vox Amplug) are really cheap, and will get you playing right away - which I feel is the most important thing.
Or you could get a modeling practise amp like Roland Micro Cube (seems like everybody I know has one of those for practice use), again this is cheap and solves the play now! problem. Read only the "Quick Guide" to get started, leave the big owner's manual for later. And, it's got a headphone jack.

In the future, near or far, you will know what you look for in an amp. Classic tube amp sounds (in here we love Fender amps, but there are many other good ones, too - plus boutique custom mades...), or the versatility of solid states/modeling amps. High gain vs. cleans. And so on.

You sorta guaranteed the warm welcome etc. There's the magic word 'girl' in your forum handle...

I could spend 1000 if it was the right choice. I am guessing I'll end up getting a small amp to start and then a larger one because I'll admit my personality will be to want more..... But I definitely need to be considerate of the neighbors at least mist of the time lol

I spoke with a guy at Fender who suggested the super champ x2 - I'm thinking of going in to the music store and listening to it and the mustang and talk about the others as well - and the options of quieting it down.

Hi there,
I just purchased my first electric guitar and it is one of the new Telecasters with the new 4th generation single coil pickups. What amps would you suggest as a first purchase and what are the pros and cons?
.....I definitely need something that will sound decent. I am in an apartment so the ability to turn it down is necessary too. Not sure how much that is going to put restrictions on my playing...

Hi Dee,
The best amp for your purposes -- playing at home, in your apartment, is without any doubt, the ZT Lunch Box amplifier.
You could also mic this amp through a PA system for small gigs if you choose to play out on any occasion, and it is easy to transport.

The ZT Lunch Box amp is in my opinion, the greatest little amp on the market, with all the wattage you will need for home use, and it has a beautiful warm sound that is indistinguishable from any tube amp at moderate volumes.
While ZT claims that the Lunch Box has "200 watts" of volume, which is nonsense; the Lunch Box probably has at least 20 watts of real world usable sound, if you crank it up, which is plenty loud for the purposes you describe.
ZT claims that the Lunch Box has a Peak Output of 120 dB at 1 meter.

The ZT Lunch Box amp also has a 1/4" headphones out jack with volume control, for use with headphones.
While the Lunch Box has a 1/8" auxiliary input jack where you could plug in a music player, if you want to play to music, I recommend using a separate music player speaker.
The ZT Lunch Box amp weighs only about 9 pounds (no battery use - switchable 115V/230V) and will accept basic guitar pedals.
That being true, the Lunch Box is probably not an ideal amp for a metal-head, but it does take a boost or an 808 style overdrive very nicely.
While the ZT Lunch Box amp does not have a reverb circuit, it does have a "ambience" control that provides a small, quasi-reverb effect, that provides a pleasant increased depth to the amplified sound.

If you try hard, you should be able to find the ZT Lunch Box amp on eBay in the (+ or -) $200.00 range, and if you do, you will be thrilled.
Personally, I think the retail price of the ZT Lunch Box amp, at nearly $400.00, is a little too high, but nearly all smaller amps tend to be in that range.
I got my Lunch Box amp on a close-out for less than $200.00 at a national guitar store, where I A/B tested the ZT Lunch Box amp with a Telecaster, right next to a Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue (approx. $770.00 retail; a great sounding amp which I also own), and the Lunch Box sounded nearly identical at store volumes.

Please note that I am NOT describing the ZT Lunch Box "Junior," with which I have no experience, and don't waste any money on the accessory speaker "cab" which ruins the warm sound that this amp produces.
Also Note: I have no affiliation with, and do not sell ZT Lunch Box Amps.

The ZT Lunch Box amp also has a very cool gig bag which is available.

Personally, I would choose the Fender Mustang 3 digital modeling amp.

1) priced under $500. US dollars.
2) quiet enough for the bedroom with the master volume knob and loud enough to gig out if you ever had too
3) loaded with ALL the effects and various amp models you could ever want which will certainly help keep your playing experience fun most of the time :D

If you want an amp to be both a bedroom practice amp and a gigging amp, you may want to look a something like a DRRI and a Weber attenuator to let you push the DRRI (or similar amp) into its sweet spot without getting evicted, yet still have the power for a gig.

If you're mostly looking for a bedroom amp that sounds great at low-ish volume, you could do a lot worse than the Yamaha THR10C 10-watt modeling amp. Its blackface Deluxe Reverb model is spot on; the Marshall sounds great too, and there's a boutique-style Class A that is a lot of fun and very responsive. It has a great spring reverb and good chorus, flanger, and tremolo. It can run on batteries or the included AC adapter.

You also might want to wait for the new Fender Mustang modeling amps to be released. Fender has been teasing the release as imminent for a couple of weeks: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=106174

That's the best way to purchase. Even if you don't feel comfortable playing at the store, have a salesperson demo every amp you want to hear and at what volume level and other appropriate settings you want to hear. All of the amps listed in this thread have some merit, a big box store will have them in stock. With a good list you should spend at least a good hour listening/playing.
Lift the amps yourself, some you may not want to lug around. IMO, 10 watts or less of tube power is plenty of volume for your situation.
Have fun blowing out the store and don't let the salesmen sell you something you don't really like!

I had an interesting day shopping for an amp. Long story short I bought one of those little Vox plug ins while I shop for a while and have a better feeling for what 'real' amp to buy. Its a bit too busy it seems to shop for an amp on a Sunday afternoon- I heard a Princeton amp and apparently there was an issue turning on the Blues Junior in store.. The Princeton even on '2' carries quite a bit and I can hear my upstairs neighbor snoring lol so how likely do you suppose the Princeton on 2 will carry through the 'walls'? I asked about the volume pedal and they knew you could put one in the effects loop. The Princeton doesn't have one . Was hoping to get more time but it was too busy I think. Hopped down the road to another store and ran into my teacher! I ended up getting the little plug in just so I can play.

I have another question - do most folks try amps in store?

Yes, whenever possible play in the store. The local Guitar Center lets me take a couple amps into one of the practice studios so I can actaully hear the nuances.

BTW the new Mustang GT-40 is showing up online. Goes for $250 and has a headphone jack.

I was wondering - can folks upload files to this forum or is it done by linking to other websites entirely/mostly?

You have a very nice guitar. It would be a shame not to hear it in it's full glory. There is so much good advice here that my head is spinning.

I went for broke and bought a 65 Twin Reverb Reissue. Sounds great at bedroom level, but when nobody's home, I let it rip and it is grand. Perhaps a Deluxe Reverb would be a good compromise? Maybe a little extreme for what you need, but it's still fun to try either one just to hear the sounds. :)

You need to link other web sites as far as I know.
For pictures, go to Imgur (recommended) or Photobucket, get an account, upload your photos to the image site, and then copy the BBCode or Bulletin Board Code from the site, and paste it in your quote, which looks like this: [img]your-photo-address[/img].
For YouTube, copy and paste a YouTube address in your quote and then place it in BBCode format like this: [youtube]your-video-address[/youtube].
