Hi there,
I just purchased my first electric guitar and it is one of the new Telecasters with the new 4th generation single coil pickups. What amps would you suggest as a first purchase and what are the pros and cons? I bought the Tele because it seemed to fit me - for whatever reason I felt the strongest connection than to the strats or les Paul I tried out. I am a newbie to electrics but not to music in general so I definitely need something that will sound decent. I am in an apartment so the ability to turn it down is necessary too. Not sure how much that is going to put restrictions on my playing... I'm a newbie so forgive any ignorance I have here!

Thanks!

Dee

All good amps, but you may also want to check out the SuperSonic 22. It gives you the extra versatility of an effects loop (not included in the DRRI, PRI or BJr) and the Burn Channel expands the tonal pallet.

The amps mentioned above are great choices in most situations but I doubt they're the right tool for the job here.

Apartment living pretty much precludes the possibility of any of those amps ever seeing their respective sweet spots.
If that was me, I would be very frustrated knowing there's some great tone in that amp but I never get to hear it.

I suggest you get a headphone preamp for your apartment.
Save up your money and when you get better and want to play "out" get a nice Deluxe Reverb for that type of duty.

As I have posted elsewhere on this forum, I place a volume pedal in the SS22's effects loop. This not only tames the idle noise, but the amp sounds great when playing at home at "TV" sound levels. Crank the volume on each channel to about seven with the Morley Mini volume at 20%.

Also makes for good mic'ed recording.

Thank you everyone for your responses, it is much appreciated!

Since I am truly a newbie here can you help me understand a few things?

first of all, what is a headphone preamp? Is that something that one would use with additional equipment later on? I assume a preamp is something that is used infront of an amp of some sort but I am not sure other than having seen pictures of smaller boxes sitting ontop of larger ones - and I have no practical knowledge of using a pre-amp. The only thing close was that I used an amp to power speakers back when I had a stereo at home.

I think my next question I'll ask in another post since I can use the 'quote' button.

I really wanted to thank all of your for your thoughtful responses. It is very much appreciated! I will post a picture of my new baby sometime soon. I am sure you guys all know what it looks like but hey, it's definitely special to me

Hello There, Archtop Bill -
Can you help me understand what the following are :
volume pedal... I have heard about pedals but am a bit intimidated because there seems to be loads of them. I assume pedals go between the guitar and amp, do all pedals have volume or is that a special sort of pedal??

what is SS22?? or what did you mean by putting a volume pedal in the SS22 effects loop? I don't know what an effects loop means. Is that some sort of daisy chain of pedals and other things??

Morely Mini - is that the volume pedal you were referring to ??

I really am a newbie, so I hope you guys will be patient - it would be much appreciated! thanks for all of your help. I don't know if I said it in this thread but I've played a classical guitar for many years but I wouldn't say well. not bad but not well. had folk guitar lessons as a kid, a few jazz guitar lessons but it never went anywhere. I have played violin for over 20 years so I'm not new to playing an instrument but very new to playing electric guitar and I am taking guitar lessons and watching youtube to figure out where to go with this. I've always wanted to play, so there is no time like the present.

thanks again!

dee

A guitar amp do not need any preamp in front.
You plug the guitar in the amp input, turn amp ON, crank the volume and plays.

Headphone preamp ( or amp ) if I understand what you mean, is a small low power amp ( often call a preamp ) use to plug and play guitar using only headphone.
You can practice at loud volume in your ears using headphone

A all solid state amp is a better amp than tubes's amps to use with headphone, more quiet.

Those amp is all tubes amps :(
1- 65 Deluxe Reverb
2- 65 Princeton Reverb
3- Blues Deluxe Reissue
4- Blues Junior III

You ask for a good amp, for most guitars players, tubes amps are the best amps for their needs.

For you I don't know.

Hi Dee,

Stratele52 and I prefer tube amps. They do, in my opinion (and a number of other guitarists) sound better and I personally feel that they have a vibe that I cannot replicate with a solid state amp. And before anyone chimes in calling me a corksniffer, this is my personal experience. Yeah, I am a tube snob and proud of it. I got my first guitar in 1965 and after 52 years I know not only what I like, but by what listeners report when I play.

As far as the volume pedal, yes I use a Morley Mini volume. In my case, it does not go between the guitar and amp, but my Tele (with N3 pickups) goes straight into the SS22 and then the effects send goes into the Morley and then immediately back into the effects return.

Tube amps are notoriously hissy compared to modern solid state amps and the SS22 is abnormally hissy. The volume pedal all but eliminates the noise for playing at home or recording. The ambient noise of a club or coffee house drowns out the noise, so it is not needed when playing a gig.

If volume level is that dicey at your apartment, you will need to look at something besides a tube amp unless you find one with a headphone jack. I am not aware of such a tube amp.

However, the Fender's Mustang and Champion lines of digital amps do have headphone jacks. Both are solid state, the Mustang interfaces with a computer (optional, it sounds great without a computer) and the Champion line has more of a tradition design, though it is a digital amp.

Fender has been leaking pictures of the third generation Mustangs which just may do the job for you.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new Tele.

There used to be a pretty darned good Fender solid state amp that went by the name of "Deluxe90".
It only lasted a year or two before Fender wrecked it by adding a bunch of silly bells and whistles and changing the basic design and tone.
That later model bore the same name but added "DSP" to the name.

The good one looked like this:

They only come up rarely in the used market, likely because they sounded better than the later DSP models.
The DSP ones show up for sale much more frequently.
Maybe keep your eyes peeled for one.
They're usually a pretty good deal.
