I've been in the market for a tele over the past month or so.
I recently went into a local shop to play a classic vibe but fell in love with an American standard. The exact one I've always loved. They offered me the tele for 1500 tax in. I bought it. The price was only 300 more then what American teles sell for used in my area (toronto, Canada)

I've never bought a brand new guitar before so I feel sick about it.
Has anyone else felt like this after a similar decision?
Did you return it or just get over it?

I guess it depends on why it's giving you regrets.
If you don't like the guitar then you might as well unload it.
If it's just the thought of the $1500 when you're used to lesser priced axes then just ride it out.
You'll get over it.
An American Standard pays for itself in the long run by way of owner satisfaction.

I always try to discourage non-players from getting hooked on guitars.
It rarely works but I try.
Sometimes they come back to me and tell me they wish they'd heeded my warning.
That's the minority of course.
Usually they come back and ask me what they should get next.

My warning:
I tell them, "If you're squeamish about spending money then you should find another hobby."

Thanks BMW-KTM.
Yeah. It's mainly the 1500. I know I can wait it out and get this same guitar in the used market for a little less.

I love the guitar. It's exactly what I wanted in a tele. I just had to pay full price for it.

Since you brought it up, IMO this is a self esteem issue rather than guitars and finances.

I can only speak for myself in this regard, but I deserve a decent guitar. Guitar is my only hobby and I do better work when I have one.

Unless you are risking not feeding your family and you are keeping a roof over your head, what is the financial impact?

This is a common condition known as "Buyer's Remorse." It will pass!
Love your guitar, and play the heck out of it! :)

Thanks for the input.

Yeah. That crossed my mind too. Financially I'm good. I sold a guitar a few weeks ago. But. I had to sell one to buy one. So I'm not rich by an means.

Music is my only hobby so I have several different instruments. I play all (extremely mediocre). None of them are valued higher then 800. This tele is one of 2 guitars.

There is always a more responsible way to use your money. But that's not very fun.

The self esteem thing. That's probably more accurate. I'm not the greatest player and I already have guitar.

Could be right Bill.

You do not see this on the web often, but here is a thought.

God wants you to play guitar.

He wants you to have an instrument you love and wants you to become a better guitarist to let out your creativity. What is creativity but a little bit of God inside you wanting to get out? This is why this guitar became available to you and you were able to take it home.

Play the guitar in good health. You deserve it.

That's profound and lovely sentiment, Bill.
I really like that train of thought.
I'm going to use it if you don't mind.

Good choice! I had a bout of this after I bought a $2100 Tele, which was more than the three other guitars I had cost at the time.
But it was mine, I had paid for it, and what made sense was my playing it! And it was better. Was it that much better? Who cares, it was better, and it was all mine, and that made me play better.
And I'm worth it.
I don't spend a fortune on vacations to the Bahamas, bass boats, season tickets, or much anything extravagant. I deserve a great axe that's all mine. And so do you. Play it, and enjoy it, and make it your friend!

Hi NPL.

I live in the Toronto area. If you paid $1,500.00 tax in for a new American Standard tele you did well.

Enjoy :D

As mentioned, you're just working thru buyers remorse. Sounds like you made the right decision (keeping it
Seems that it is the right guitar for you..

The most expensive guitar I've ever purchased was a Gibson SJ200 Standard I bought new last march. I have wanted an SJ200 for many years, when the opportunity was there financially, I start to get serious about it.

I've been playing guitar professionally for over 45 years. I've made a lot of money doing so.

But still I had to walk my way through dropping +4K on a guitar.. It was my wife who pushed the buttons for me, and finally bought it. A year later, and I'm glad I did. I have a few nice acoustics, but nothing like this. I appreciate it every day when I open the case, take it out, and play it.

Life is hard enough at times, enjoy what you can till things change and for one reason or another, you can't..
This aint no dress rehearsal.. enjoy the Tele and just appreciate that the situation was available to where you were able to afford the purchase. Don't beat yerself up over it.... Play it in good health for many years.
