Hello,
Could anyone point me in the direction of some replacement tuning machines for a Telecaster Modern Player? I just picked one up used and don't care for the bulky, sloppy vintage tuners on there.

Would prefer a drop in replacement that either fits the existing holes or covers the original holes. And also would prefer not to have to drill any new holes.
I like the Fender locking Gotoh tuner style. The Gotoh mini 501's are the style I'm after. Don't need to be locking but I would prefer it.

Thanks for any help or advice!

Is the guitar stay in tune or not ?
Are you sure the tuner is the issue ? nut may need work .
Or you just the like the tuning machine ?

This guitar may use metric size, not American or SAE for their parts. To be checked.
You have to take some mesurements and look here;

It stays in tune fine. It's just tuning it is sloppy. Lots of backlash. I like a higher tuning ratio too.

The purpose of a tuning machine is to tune the guitar and keep it in tune. Yours tuning machine work well.

I'll won't replace them as you are not experienced and you may have hard time to find some or to fit them.

I am experienced. I'm currently building two Strats and a Tele. I can replace tuners. I just wanted to hear from some owners of this model that could recommend good replacements.
And no, these do not work well and have a very low gear ratio

Yes. The Gotoh vintage tuners will fit. But regarding certain parts/hardware I don't care for 'vintage'. Which is ironic to put vintage tuners on a model named Modern Player. I think certain things that are vintage, like tuners, are great to keep on a real vintage guitar. But they are an outdated and improved upon design. Modern tuners like Gotoh and Schaller are so
much better. Why use an old and outdated piece of hardware that's such an important part of the guitar? Vintage pickguard? Sure. Vintage pickups? Ok I suppose. Vintage tuners? Not for me. It's just a personal preference.

I hear Ping tuning machine are great and low cost.
I've only see those in music store.

Also see d'Adario, Schaller Planet Wave and many many more. You must check for mesurements

The ones you, Irish Luck, have are Fender part number 0074936000 (checked the service diagram).
BTW, those are used in the Classic Vibe, Baja series - and probably others, too.

Borrowed the specs from angela.com:
".359" diameter on the splined portion of the headstock bushing, .434" diameter upper lip that sits on the face of the headstock, .3035" overall bushing height. Tuner shaft measured .239" diameter, overall length 1.025". Head stock bushings are included."

One brand I can recommend is Schaller - and they don't call their machine heads 'vintage' since that seems to bug you, they call them 'original'.

Hi,
How did you get on with replacing your tuners?
What did you go with?
