so here is the situation. I bought a used American Standard Tele about 2 years ago. it has been a great guitar. dating the ser # it appears to be a 2010.

I love the guitar, but the other day I plugged it in and it has very low sound. I plugged in a couple other guitars to the amp and they sound normal. ruled out the amp. and the cable. The sound coming from the guitar is audible maybe even a comfortable low volume when maxed. no static, buzz, cracking etc.
So I thought well might be the pickups are done. could be other things, I haven't really checked it out yet.
The question is, would you swap the pickups out on an Amer Std and if so to what? My thought was to put another stock set in, or I could get a set of Texas Special or some other set that might even improve the sound. Than it wouldn't really be Amer Std though.

I did swap the P/U's on my Strat but it is MIM so it has had a few changes made to it that I don't mind doing. I'll never get the money back out of it but I have no intention of selling it either.

so what do you think? Would you swap out the pickups and if so for what? I mean obviously they may have to get changed but I could just put in another set of stockers. BTW anybody know what the stock P/U set is?

Please read, I know there may be other issues that I have to look into. I did think about the height setting but it hasn't changed since I bought it so that isn't it.

Both pickups can't be dead in same time, you may have a wiring issue. Easy to fix.

Post picture of electronic under the chrome plate, just two screws to remove.

yep I thought of that as well. It would be almost impossible for both to go out at same time.
the weird part is usually if wiring gets hosed you will "hear" it. either cracking, buzzing or whatever

It's unlikely, but not impossible. If someone grabbed the wrong cable and plugged in the speaker output from an amp instead of the instrument input, it wouldn't surprise me if it fried the coils...

Its possible that you need a new volume pot. I would check both pots 1st, caps, wiring and if all the electronics/wiring are good check the DCR of the pickups.
If your issue isn't potentiometers, caps or wiring and the DCR of the pickups is bad, you will need new pickups.

I did consider that.
me being me I guess where I am is....if I am going to open it up, I may as well change the pick ups, the pots and the pick guard. what I want to avoid is being the idiot who destroys the value of a great guitar by making those changes. Not that I will ever sell it as I do not intend to, but I still don't want to negatively affect it.
I have no problem making the changes.
I guess it isn't going to fix itself either way so I will have to open it up and at least so some testing and snooping around. which means it will probably get Texas Specials LOL I love them in the Strat.

When I did the strat I just made sure to keep all the stock parts and of course did not make any "permanent" changes.

Probably a short wire to the guitar ground or broken output wire or mai wire.
Open it and you'll see .

Changing pickups won't help, if the problem is not with the present pickups...
Anyway, 'toss-it-all-and-buy-new' is not my SOP or recommendation, so diagnose/fix first, do the upgrades after that if you want to.

On diagnosing, things not yet mentioned:
You can measure the pickups without taking the guitar apart; just plug in a cable and test from it's other (unplugged) end.
One possible cause is the jack.
How does the vol behave on different switch positions; bridge only/both/neck only?

Hey jmattis - yeah I wasn't saying toss it all and buy new, but I do like the Texas Specials so if I have to open it up may as well put them in. not to mention if I have to break out the solder gun anyway.....LOL

Volume is the same in all three switch positions. I will probably take a peek inside this weekend.

I will say when I did the Strat I was very surprised at the poor quality work done in wiring it up. Easy to see how a wire could come loose etc.
