Hi, new to forum and just getting back into guitar so forgive me if this is a dumb question: how do you tell if a solid Tele body is an actual Fender body?

Reason I ask is that I bought a guitar that was sold as a refurbished Tele in maple but later could find no evidence that Fender ever made maple body telecasters. Guitar has been refurbished and refinished (natural) and hardware / pickguard changed so only really have the body to go on. Any guidance on how to tell if this is a Fender body or not?

If it's got a natural finish, the grain of the wood can be a good indicator. A solid maple body would, in my experience, be an odd thing. Having a maple top on a different wood body, like a les Paul does or anything with a fancy flame/quilt finish is more likely.

Sometimes the forum can identify if a guitar body is 'made by Fender' or something else.
But not without pics. On body only, the neck pocket + possible stamps&markings, the routings, bridge, jack, wiring etc. If a guitar has been modded, more pics are needed than for an original one. If the neck is original, pics of the whole guitar, too - all sides.

I haven't heard of a solid maple bodied Fender Tele, but anything is possible with Fender - they've done rosewood, redwood, empress, mahogany (...) on top of the 'normal' ones.

Maple is heavy. Around 50% heavier than swamp ash.
This is the main reason why maple is almost only used as a veneer for bodies, as in flamed maple top (FMT).

When "maple" is used as a description for Fender guitars, it usually pertains to the neck. All of them (except very special models) have maple necks, but those without a rosewood fingerboard are generally called maple necks. If I saw maple in the description, that's what I'd assume was meant. And if it said maple body, I'd assume a maple top body.

If someone wanted to sell me a maple guitar, I'd want to know the weight first. Cause standing on stage for a couple of hours with a 12+ lb guitar isn't my idea of fun.
