I bought this Telecaster some years ago, back then someone painted the body yellow with a spraycan, I could easily remove the paint and it revealed this JD read body, but without the double bindings, the wood looks like ash and is a bit heavy, the serial is odd as well as it starts with MG and then N70308, (MGN70308). I read somewhere that MG could be Master Grade and that could also explain why there is no bindings maybe, everything fits nicely together and it's a great player.

My question is: Do anyone know about something like this one being made in Japan and is it a master grade instrument?

My guess is, someone personalized a neck plate

But it does not look like someone personalized it, it looks legit.

Yamano, the Fender distributor in Japan, would sometimes order a factory special run of high grade guitars, and then modify them further in their own custom shop, which could include re-spraying them in colors that Fender did not provide, but the Japanese customers wanted.
They would then change the serial number from a Fender serial number to their own MG serial number for "Master Grade" (not to be confused with Master Built, which they aren't), and put a Yamano decal on the back.

They are high grade guitars, but if you removed the outer finish thinking it was something a previous owner had done, you might have reduced the value considerably. if original, $2000+ is not unthinkable. Stripped of the custom job, perhaps half that.

Thank you so much for the information, that helped allot.. There is unfortunately no decal on the back, but the paint i removed was not the original paint, it was painted by the previous owner with a spray-can, that's why I removed the paint to reveal the original red paint underneath..
It really feels like a high grade guitar..

The following was posted by John Page in 2005:

The Master Grade question came up earlier in this thread, and I must admit, I didn't remember much about it. But when you mentioned Yamano, it started to come back. As I recall, we started the Master Grade because Yamano wanted a guitar that could be perceived as almost Master Built quality and yet be ordered in quantity. Back then a Master builder averaged about 3-5 guitars a month, maybe 7 max. Depending on the complexity of the guitar, it took at least 30-40 hours to build one from scratch. Yamano wanted to order 100 plus of several models. Obviously these were quantities we couldn't support as MB instruments, so we developed the Master Grade series. MB supervised, CS staff built, highest grade materials, killer detail. I think these must have started around 1996... at least to the best I can remember.

The Yamanos that I remember seeing retained the Fender CS neckplate, to which Yamano added a logo. OP, have you pulled the neck? Yamano Master Grade builds should be labelled in red ink. Keep in mind that the neck might not be original to the body. The neck looks to be a genuine JD neck. I've never seen an unbound JD body.

i know you can buy all kinds of neckplates, but I've seen others like mine from the 90th, so I don't think it's a fake neckplate.

Here is a strat with the same kind of neckplate: http://ameblo.jp/howlguitars/entry-12079693029.html

This appears to be a late 90s (Crafted in Japan) JD neck on a completely unrelated body. All the JD Teles that I've encountered had the double binding, Stratocaster neck pickup, 5-hole black pickguard and chrome plating. Unless somebody else knows otherwise...

After long time research I think this is a Yamano master grade body and hardware, which has been fitted with a JD neck, it makes sense when looking at other Yamano mastergrade builds.
