Again, not that knowledgeable on this, but a number of you guys seem to know what you are talking about.

What are the "custom" Telecasters [or Stratocasters] offering to make them appealing to folks, over the Fenders?

Such as Crook, Melancon, etc.

How is Fender comparing to G&L and other full factories in folk's opinion these days?

I am extremely happ with my Fender '52 reissue, so wonder what is improved on these guitars.

Thanks.

No replies, since I am not an expert, maybe the question(s) is too general.

What do people view, primarily, as the appeal of the customs, better electronics, neck, etc?

This comes from my non-expert opinion that my tele, and thus the customs would/can be made to do whatever you want.

My feelings are that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The Fender Telecaster is one of the finest guitars ever invented.

Check with John Bryant (Jimmy's son), and many others.

I'm wondering if he is talking about Custom Shop guitars? If so, they are top of the line Fender teles custom made by Fender

I *think* that he was referring to other manufacturers who make a very similiar design (almost identical copy sometimes) as the Fender Telecaster. (i.e. Anderson, etc)

A guitar can be a very personal thing. We tend to modify them in our search for the instrument that suits us. Different pickups, necks wiring schemes, are all things we can do. What the custom builder seem to do is take the basic tele design, which is amazing, and modify it to make a customized guitar. they do essentially what the custom shop does. You may find that a Crook for example is closer to your vision of the perfect tele.

My friend whos in a band loves telecasters almost as much as I do. He went through a few months where he kept buying and trading his telecasters to try to find that perfect model. He started with an american deluxe, then it changed to a AV52RI, then a Thinline, then a baja and he finally settled on a G&L ASAT semi-hollow. It is an amazing guitar but it truly depends on what your preference is. Think of the custom brands as other models and simply that. Try them out, and if you like them, then awesome. You just need to find the model that fits you.

I guess that is the problem with my post.

I wasn't sure exactly, just wondered why so many "seem" to make Telecasters, but are called something else, when the Telecaster seems so good to me.

I wondered what, if any specific thing(s) the custom guys - Crook, etc. did, to make them appealing.

It appears that like Curly in City Slickers, it is not "just one thing".

I think he meant companies like Valley Arts (Gibson), Tom Anderson Guitarworks, Sadowsky and anyone else who makes high-priced custom guitars to the stars that just happen to look like Strats and Teles. Didn't Leo have patents?

At least G&Ls were made by Leo.
