I'm in the middle of replacing the lame bridge pup in my mim 72 custom with an iron gear double stack switchable bridge pup but have come unstuck and could do with some help.

I purchased all the relevant pots and caps and replaced the neck controls and bridge tone control like for like wired the same as stock. The difficulty comes from the push/push switch in the bridge volume position.

Iron gear couldn't tell me how to wire it up as I guess they had mainly designed it for a normal tele set up, which is what the accompanying wiring diagram was for.

Anybody done anything similar who could help?

As it stands, the neck pickup is working fine and responding to the pots fine.

The bridge volume/switch control increases the volume, but there is nothing from the pickup. Just the background hum increasing in volume. The pot is also scratchy.

The bridge tone I think works, hard to tell with no pickup output but the hum changed then disappeared as the tone rolled off as expected.

Overall the guitar has feedback hum problems. Touching the pickup cover or bridge increases hum, don't know if separate grounding problem or something to do with the bridge problem.

The switch appears to be switching the coils correctly.

Maybe this will help.

Iron Gear Diagram

Understand, you did not buy a humbucker.
You also did not buy a silent single.
You bought a true single coil with two separate sets of windings of which one is switchable in and out.
The guitar should get louder when the second coil is engaged.
There is no provision in that setup for hum cancelling.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Thanks yes I am expecting a normal amount of hum but at the moment when I touch the humbucker cover or the bridge etc the hum gets huge.

Pretty hard to diagnose from afar even with details and pics.
Most of these issues are solved by experience, a process of elimination and resistance measurements.
It does sound like an earth missing but could be anything.
Does the small switch work , does the pickup work, does the pot and 5 way work.. have you wired it correctly.
You could start by checking the pickup. What is its dc resistance?
If you cannot check this or dont know how wire it where the other pickup is and check it that way. Swap the pickups around etc. All this can be done plugging it in with the pickguard strings etc off and by tapping the pickups lightly with with a metal screw driver or similar
Hope that helps somewhat. :D

Well I fixed the earth issue one of the tiny little bare wires in the humbucker wire had not been soldered to the pot.

However I still couldn't get the bridge working so took it down the shop and he said for £20-30 I'd have it in about a week. I'd love to had done it myself, but for that price I might just get him to do all my work haha.

Well 9ngot the guitar back and it's still not right. Conveniently, the guy I took it to rang me to go get it 3 hours before he closed up shop to go to NAMM for 10 days, so I havn't been back to find out what's going on.

Now I'm in contact with the pickup maker again, they wanted a wiring diagram for the original wiring.

I have scoured Google and am struggling to find anything correct, original and actually usefull.

Does anybody have a proper fender stock wiring diagram, or can get me a photo of a known original stock wiring arrangement? Im getting desperate.........

The original (service) diagrams are still on the Fender website:

2004 Upgrade '72 TELE CUSTOM 013-7500/7502

That's perfect thanks. That was the best diagram I had found but I didn't get it from fender and it wasn't as good quality to hard to see some bits. Hopefully now I can soon get my guitar working.

It was my first expensive guitar and to this day still the most I've spent on a guitar, 14 years ago after working a summer job as a kid and drooling over the front line catalogue haha. And I've hated that shrill lifeless stock bridge pup ever since haha.

Any chance you'd draw the current wiring diagram (with the push-push-pot and the IronGear Smoke Stack) and post a pic on the forum? Someone (electrowizzarder than me) might be able to tell what's wrong.
