Hello Folks!

I purchased some thick flat bound strings for my Fender Telecaster. I did not realize they were too thick and the pressure busted the nut in 2. Does anyone recommend a good bone nut for my MIM Telecaster? Is there one that would require less modifying on my part?

This site has the Fender nuts. Note that you can only get real bone for 7.25" radius fingerboards - if yours is 9.5" radius, you're stuck with melamine (even those that Fender call "Original Bone Nut Blanks" are melamine), unless you go for 3rd party parts.

And you'll have to do some filing of the ends and groove adjustment no matter what. I recommend biting the bullet and pay a tech to do it, because you only get one chance - file too deep and you better start over again.
And they'll have the files, CA glue dissolver to clean the slot out with, and measuring equipment to get the height right.

Thanks Rock Star . . . How can I measure the radius? I have a MIM Fender Telecaster. Perhaps I can look up the specs.

Thank for the link my friend!

If they still sell the exact model, you probably can.
They come in both 7.25" and 9.5" flavors. Anything with "classic" or "vintage" in the name is likely to have a 7.25" radius, and anything with "standard" in the name is likely to have a 9.5" radius.

To quote myself from another thread:

Primary school method:

Set a compass (or a string with a pencil tied to the end) to 9.5" distance, then draw a small arc of a circle on a piece of paper. About the width of your fretboard will do.
Cut along the line, and place the outer part on the fretboard.

If fits perfectly, you have a 9.5".
If it wobbles, you have a 7.25".
If it arches, you have a bigger radius than 9.5"
If it arches more the farther down the fretboard, you have a compound radius.

High school method:

Place a ruler at the lip of the fretboard, from one edge corner to another. Then measure two things:
- The width of the fretboard on the ruler. Divide by two and call the result l.
- The maximum height over the ruler between the 3rd and 4th string. This is called the sagitta, and we'll call it s.
Plug it into the following formula:
r = (l^2 + s^2) / 2s

If you measured 2.25" width and .067" height, you get:
r = (1.125 * 1.125 + 0.067 * 0.067) / (0.067 + 0.067)
r = 9.478", or 9.5"

Redneck method:

Eyeball the durn guitar. Look down the plunkboard towards a car with 19" tires. If it rounds the same, it's a 9.5" (half of 19"). If it rounds more, it's 7.25".

Consumer method:

Call Fender Customer Support.

You sir, I would upvote you if I only knew how! In my minds-eye, I SAW me standing in the driveway looking down the "plunkboard". Without a doubt, the best thing I'll read today.

And BTW - most misleading title of a thread ever! ;)
