Gee whiz, I missed a lot of fun here with the usual truss rod "hand wringers," stratele52 and jmattis offering their advice for "mandatory" feeler gauge measurements when adjusting the truss rod on a Telecaster.
-1000.

And Three Cheers to arth1 for his general contribution of common sense in this thread.

Navin, you will never learn anything about your guitar if you don't begin to experiment and learn to "sense" where the problems are and how to alleviate problems in your setup.
You will gain the most experience and knowledge about your guitar by using your eyes and your brain.

You cannot gain that knowledge and experience by sticking to a "formula approach" to adjusting your instrument, which does not involve an "applied approach" to balancing the elements that contribute to the setup and action of your guitar.

I believe that people who are inexperienced with measuring string gap with a feeler gauge, can be even more prone to inaccurate truss rod adjustments than doing it by eye and feel.
This is because there is no application of common sense and brain power when sticking to the formula approach to adjusting your truss rod.

Sighting down the sides of the neck from the bottom of the guitar, both sides should look almost straight.
In fact, you can adjust the truss rod to where the neck appears straight, and then back off slightly, to where there is just a slight bit of relief in the neck.
Then check each string at each fret for fret buzz.
Adjust the bridge saddles, relative to the radius of the neck, trying to alleviate fret buzz at every fret.

If you believe that the bridge height is getting too high, tweek the truss rod a little and try again.
Just remember that the neck should appear to be almost straight when sighting down the neck from the bottom of the guitar.

But as I said a while back, to me, it is somewhat unusual for you to not be able to alleviate fret buzz in the low "E" and "A" strings.
Those are usually not the problem strings, and to me, this raises a question as to whether your frets may need leveled.

Said it before and I'll say it again:
[Problems with a guitar] + [non-experienced owner doing the setup] = apparent need for measuring.
Eyeballing (successfully) and knowing the right relief/action/amount of turning the bolt (etc.) for a certain player and a certain guitar comes with experience. If such a question is posted on the forum, eyeballing hasn't done the job in the diagnostic process...

Still repeating: I ain't giving advice for experienced techs on the forum...

A lot of believing and approximates, if those are supposed to be guidelines for a beginner. But, recalling you recommended over 3 mm string heights not so long ago, I get your drift...

If one needs relief (which is a question of the player's style & other such vague things), a good and practical "tech tip for a beginner without the dreaded feeler gauge set" might be to
- adjust the neck straight (a ruler, or a string pressed on first & last frets will help here...)
- then loosen the truss rod just enough (try 1/8 of a turn looser, give it an hour to settle) so you can slide a piece of your everyday printer paper under the lowE string at the eight fret.
And presto, you have a nice 0,1 mm (.004") relief.
