Is it common to find unnecessary solder on the bottom of the pots of a new Fender guitar? There's also a brown looking gel there as well. Any help is appreciated.

Pictures always help in these kinds of things.
It sounds at first like it's prolly normal but until we can see exactly what it is, it's just not feasible to make a definitive judgement call.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

The "brown looking gel" is undoubtedly Rosin Flux used in the soldering process.
Rosin Flux dissolves and prevents oxidation between the contact surface and the solder, and allows the solder to flow more freely onto the contact surface.

If your "NEW" Fender guitar was bought from an authorized Fender Dealer, the somewhat "sloppy" soldering job is undoubtedly factory original.
I can't say whether this may be common or not.
It could be just a May 6th build, following Cinco de Mayo......

This is the volume knob. The guitar is a Fender Custom Shop Esquire. It's not new, I bought it from Dave's Guitar used.

I agree... looks like a "do it yourself" mod or repair

That kind of mess is not typical of what you would see from the factory where these guys would likely do this work all day long and have the right soldering tools and materials vs. some work done by someone who wasn't really all that adept at soldering. (it takes some practice) the second series of pictures is what you'd expect the factory install to look like.

Hi Blue Notes,
It would be great if you would put the pictures of your Telecaster back into photobucket.com and edit the above posts to again show the pictures, as I missed the brief peak at your former axe.
Then, it would be great if you would disclose where you purchased the "new" Telecaster, where you sold it, and where you purchased your reliced Stratocaster.

I viewed the pictures of your heavily reliced '50s or '60s Statocaster on photobucket.com.
http://s1224.photobucket.com/user/iclou ... f.jpg.html

I noticed that there is no serial number on the headstock......, which is not unusual.....;

Image

.....and I noticed that it also does not have a serial number or any marking on the neck plate...., which is quite unusual....

Image

I notice that your pictures show that you have apparent documentation that your heavily reliced Strat was supposedly, originally purchased from Wildwood Guitars.

Image

Here is an example of a Fender Custom Shop 2016 Limited 1958 Stratocaster Heavy Relic that is currently at Wildwood Guitars.
http://www.wildwoodguitars.com/products ... D=88&n=66#

As you can see, current Wildwood heavily reliced Statocasters have the Fender Custom Shop logo and the serial number on the neck plate.

Image

However, some Fender Custom Shop heavily reliced Stratocasters, just have the serial number on the neck plate (which is how they should all be).

Image

But I would venture to opine that NO Fender Custom Shop heavily reliced Stratocaster fails to exhibit a serial number.

Where ever you bought your Stratocaster, my guess is that you either bought a stolen Custom Shop guitar with the neck plate removed, or bought a "partscaster," possibly with an original Fender Custom Shop reliced neck, having a made-up body with reliced hardware and persuasive looking case candy, in a non-Custom Shop tweed case.
Just wondering, if you might tell us what you paid for this guitar, and where you got it?

MickJagger, you obviously don't know much about Fender Custom Shop guitars.

Do your research before you make such a decision that my guitar is fake.

The serial number is on the tremolo back plate, just as they were in early 1954.

If you had looked a little more closely, you would have spotted it in my above photos. I blew it up for you, hopefully you can see it.

Thank you for the clarification.
I never saw a CS guitar that was done like that before.

You'd think if they were going to be so exacting about details that didn't pan out, like the serial on the trem cavity plate. They'd stick to the colour scheme of 54.
bet it's got a 5 position switch too

Sorry, I digress and half jest. I think one of the best moves made on the Strat was shifting that serial number from the cavity cover.
Nice guitar.
I'd like to see the telecaster solder though. Balls of solder in the cavity is a stupid mistake. The builder needs speaking to.
