I find the compensated saddles very helpful to set the intonation on a 3 saddles Tele bridge.

Remember that another important source of intonation issue is a too high nut; if the nut is cut too high, when playing open chords in the first frets the intonation can be really messed up. The fretted strings will go sharp, the open ones not. Really BAD sound. In this case the only cure is to fix the nut properly.
I had a Strat which was perfectly intonated at the 12th fret, sounded fine everywhere except in the first 5 frets.... Until I spotted the high nut. After the cure it was perfect.

Another source of issue is if you come from acoustic guitar and you fret with a heavy hand, you can experience the same issue in the first frets.

:( One of my many bad habits I have to continually work on to overcome!

+1. Same. Interestingly, my Tele seems more susceptible to heavy hand than my Stratocaster or LP Traditional.

That could be a lot of things. Nut height, fret size, string gauge, scale length, neck profile, trem or not, playing position, or just caused by the general feel of the instrument, etc; etc; etc...

But as mentioned before, with heavy hands, one possible "cure" is checking intonation with both notes fretted; 2nd to 14th fret etc.

BTW, one cure for heavy hands is practicing with jumbo frets and real thin strings (BTW for the BTW; a scalloped neck even better). If one has as much as somewhat decent ears, the out-of-tune horribile really forces towards relaxing the excess finger pressure.

Yeah, you can go wrong during a solo and 80% of the people will not notice or care but there's nothing worse than a bad intonated chord imho, especially open G, C and D. They can really sound horrible if you press too much or the nut is high.

Some play vibrato by default, masking notes being out of tune.
Others subconsciously adjust the pressure and get the pitch where it should be despite the terrible intonation of fixed fret instruments.

The latter are guitar players. The former need to take their beta blockers.

Sherman: "Gee, thanks, Mr. Peabody!! .....A competitive antagonist that blocks endogenous 'adrenaline' and 'noradrenaline' on my adrenergic beta receptor sites, mediating the fight-or-flight response of my sympathetic nervous system, is just what I need for my next guitar recital.
