In a few weeks I'll be getting my first Fender, definitely a Telecaster. I'm rather new to guitars, learning on a Taylor acoustic. Hope to one day let this grow into more than one but to start I am thinking a MIM Std Telecaster(most likely) but maybe a '72 Telecaster Deluxe. I realize the obvious differences such as single coil vs humbuckers and the 9.5" vs the 12" radius fretboard but hoping the Fender experts could steer me. At my skill level, I can't tell much difference in the feel of the 2, only the sound of which I like both.

MIM are good guitars , a good choice for a first guitar.
Radius 9.5 or 12. It is a matter of taste and feeling, both are good. I have both on my guitars.
Wich guitar ? All model are good. Buy the one you like.
Buy it from a store you know they will do a complete set up. All guitar new or second hand may need a complete set up to play at is best

Now the bad news ; What every beginner in electric guitar don't want to ear;

Most important ; the amp .
You must put at least same money on a amp and best is more than you put on the guitar.
A good guitar will sound poor on a "low" budget amp.
A low budget guitar will sound very great on a good amp.

Classic 72 telecaster cost close to $800 msrp
Buy a $800 amp and more is better.
Better is a good 25 watts amps with no guizmo at $800 than a 100 watts amp at $800 with thousand of guizmo.

Thank you for the help. Spent the weekend researching and kinda leaning now to the MIM Black Std Telecaster HH and the Fender Superchamp X2 but not definite yet. Will be stopping by GC this week. Trying to keep the budget <$1000.

We have to start somewhere and money don't grow in tree. Just remember your guitar will sound better with a better amp than this Superchamp

I'd like to say that a guitar is only half the instrument.

And I'd say the most important thing is neither the guitar nor the amp, but practice. And more practice. Not noodling. Practice. Your fingers will hurt, your significant other will leave you (hopefully just for the time you practice), but unless you can set aside time for practice and not use that time for anything else, it doesn't matter what guitar and amp you have.

A decent guitar and amp helps, in that you don't lose the motivation to practice because the equipment sucks. But it's likely not going to be the guitar and amp you one day play for others. So save money, just make sure you actually like what you buy.

Ok, can I do this? I get the Tele and run it through my Fishman Loudbox Mini for practice until I can decide which Fender amp to get. FYI, decided on the Std Telecaster HH(MIM model).

On a different note. Why does my join date show 2007 when I just joined the forum a few days ago?

The Lake Placid Blue is gorgeous. Can only imagine how much better the American Std could be. No regrets with the MIM version. Can't find a flaw on it. Also got the Blues Jr tweed NOS.

You got yourself a great setup.
Now go and play it as if you stole it ..... 8)
