Hi

I thought this was most likely the best place to get sound advice about my guitar...so here goes. I acquired a 1977/78 original Telecaster Deluxe in about 1980...it was in perfect condition and the guitar of my dreams...over the years I've played in bands and it's been a wonderful guitar. The demands of work and family eventually took my spare time and it was put in it's flight case around 5 years ago. Recently I took it out to play and noticed one of the pick ups didn't work....found a great repairer who rewound this and got it back to it's original sound.

I've made the decision to sell it, as I could do with the money and it seems such a waste just having it stuck in it's flight case. Apart from the lacquer coming off the fret board it's in pretty good state for its age. My question is where is the best place to sell such a guitar....not sure I'd like to risk EBay and I haven't much idea of its true value....any advice welcome....

Assuming it is all genuine, unmodified, etc. I would imagine you could advertise in the neighbourhood of $4.5K and expect to get somewhere between $3.5K & $4K. That might be a little high. eBay usually sees things sell at higher prices than by other means. That's also provided you can find a buyer. The advantage of eBay is its worldwide exposure. From where I stand it looks to be a buyer's market right now in the local classifieds. Near me the number of sellers is increasing and the number of buyers is decreasing. Stuff sits unsold more often than normal. It's been that way for a couple of years now. And of course there are people who don't realize that and they post ads asking ridiculously high prices. Those guys don't close very many deals. I bought an amplifier last fall that I watched for many months while the price dropped each time it came up. I bought it for a hair more than half of his original asking price.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Thanks for that...interesting and I wonder if the UK market is the same (I'm Uk based). If I have to use Ebay I would but surely no one would want to make such a purchase without playing it first. It's had no modifications at all and the only thing that isn't original is one of the ferrules at the back which I had to replace as I lost one.

I think you might be surprised.
There are a lot of people who are enchanted by the thought of owning an older guitar.
Myself, I'd take a new guitar every time, "dollar for dollar".
Ultimately, if you don't like the sound of the guitar, you can replace the pickups, or tamper with the pots and cap.
It's not really like an acoustic guitar, which in my opinion, new or used, requires a try-out.

But if I was looking at a used "older" electric guitar on eBay, I'd want to see a close-up pictures that show the condition of the frets, including the top of the neck (preferably with the strings removed), as well as other pictures that show the exact condition of the guitar.
In addition to external pictures, this might include a picture of the wiring and the date on the base of the neck, etc.
So you might want to consider that if you really want to sell the guitar for a decent price.

If you put it up for a true eBay "auction," as opposed to a "buy now" price, and the guitar is in good shape, you could put a 2,000 € / £ /$ "blind reserve" on it and see what happens.

Good Luck!!

Appreciate those comments and advice...I do have more close ups of frets, headstock, back, and pick ups but didn;t think about the electrics. Easy enough to do and all still the original. I'll keep in mind what you suggest when and if I post it on Ebay.

I agree. Be sure to make it clear that the buyer will pay for shipping, especially if you are going to make it available for sale overseas...those costs can eat into your profits!

And be upfront about any flaws, pointing them out on pictures. It's better to get slightly less paid for the instrument than getting it returned and charges reverted.
