Hi everybody,

I've been looking at a pretty nice 2006 Fender American Deluxe Telecaster Two-Tone Sunburst (Ash). The write-up says that it has a "U" shaped neck profile. I'm used to, and comfortable with a "C" profile. I realize that the "U" shape would be chunkier, but the question is how much chunkier. A subscriber, on another forum, posted that the American Deluxe (Ash), with a "U" shaped neck, was available in the past. He'd owned one, and said that he got rid of it because, "it never even approached that of a '52". I'm thinking that he was referring to the guitars neck shape, and not the '52 Telecaster guitar as a whole.
Does anyone have any experiences with these guitars, and could comment with additional information? I have fairly big hands and, if the other forum subscriber is correct, maybe in 2006 Fenders idea of a "U" shaped neck was more like a softer version. Like a Hard 'V" and a Soft "V". I don't know.

Any input would be welcome...................Dave

I have a 2009 American Vintage '52 Telecaster that has a "1-Piece Maple, 'U' Shaped" neck.
All I can say is that my “U” Shaped neck is not overly large, but may be just slightly larger than some other Telecaster necks.
It is very comfortable to play, and I'm not a big fan of what may be considered "chunky necks" (one of the reasons I like the feel of Fender guitars).

Unfortunately, I cannot comment as to how that may translate to a 2006 American Deluxe Telecaster, if it actually has a “U” Shaped neck.
I also have no idea how much variation in the thickness in Fender Deluxe series necks, and Vintage series necks, may be expected; or if there would be a difference in the size and shape of a "U" shaped neck between the Fender Deluxe series, and Vintage series Telecasters.

What I do know is that the 2006 American Deluxe Telecaster uses a "Bi-flex" or dual action truss rod, adjusted at the headstock, has 22 frets, and is a compound radius neck (9.5" -14").
The '52 American Vintage Telecaster uses a single action truss rod, adjusted at the heal of the neck, has 21 frets and is a 7.25" radius neck.
So any "U" shaped Deluxe series neck (assuming they were made) would not come from the same production necks, as the "U" shaped Vintage series necks, and therefore, the two necks cannot be readily compared.

I assume that you are looking at this guitar online and can't try it out.
What I can also say is that if it still has the SCN noiseless pickups, they are great.
Perhaps if someone has one of these guitars, they can give you a better idea of what you might be able to expect.

Compound radius necks didn't came into surface until 2010.

American Deluxe necks produced before that date sport a 9.5'' radius and abalone dot inlays. Post-2010 compound radius Deluxe necks had black pearloid dots (white pearloid on rosewood fingerboards).

That is correct.
I looked that up somewhere on line.
Unfortunately, I don't know where, but I must have been looking at a post-2010 spec sheet?????
Thanks.
