Hi, I have a 2016 American Standard Tele. Has anyone installed strap locks on these? The two that I am looking at are the shaller ones and the fender ones that look just like the shaller ones.

If this as simple as taking one off and putting another on?

anyone?

Thanks!

There's one issue worth noticing - this applies to any brand strap locks:
Check that the strap lock's screws fit the hole in the guitar, or if you reuse the original (guitar's) screws, that they fit the strap lock hole.

If necessary, screw holes in the body can be fixed (/made tighter) by applying rapid epoxy with a toothpick inside the hole, repeat until snug. Or the oldschool way, tiny strips of wood + some wood glue.

I have a new American Standard Strat and use the Schaller locks. I found myself having to tighten up the buttons all the time, so I did the toothpick fix to be sure. I did it "dry" and they are very tight and snug. I used the Schaller screws.

Don't forget to use the washers.
They're a pain to fit, 'cos they make it difficult to get the supplied nut to grip the thread on the straplock body, but if you don't fit 'em your guitar is an accident waiting to happen.

An altogether more pleasurable option is to go out and buy a least 2 bottles of Grolsch Lager.
Drink the beer, and use the rubber seal on the bottle cap to fit over the standard strap buttons.

I have used Schaller strap locks for years, and they're installed on all my electric guitars...they're great, IMHO.

I did the superglue-and-toothpick trick on each if them as well, and they rarely (if ever) have to be tightened. Be sure to use the felt washers on the strap buttons to protect the finish of the guitar.

Agreed, except that you can't buy just the strap pieces, so if you like to change straps, you either have to buy full expensive sets and not use the screwed in piece, or you have to move the strap pieces over whenever changing straps, which is a pain.
I also don't like that you have to make a bigger hole in most straps to get them to work. This prevents just trying on a new strap.

I'm thinking about making myself some of the old school leather straplocks, and equip them with a locking strap lock on the outer end (unlike the below). Once affixed to the guitar, I should then be able to use any strap instantaneously, no mods.

I got a delivery today with two different kinds of shaller strap locks. One was packaged by them and had beefier screws. It was made for Gibson LPs. They installed with almost no effort. I was surprised that my GLP had no padding between the strap button and then body of the guitar.

The other set is made by fender. It will be installed on my tele when it gets back from being setup. The cool part is that the strap attachments are identical, but the body mount screws are completely different!! The ones that came in the fender packaging are narrower and shorter than the shaller brand ones.

The screws are different because of the wood. You need longer or deeper threaded screws with mahogany than with ash.

I took a different approach to the problem of screws loosening after a button swap.
The original buttons were not coming loose so I didn't want to fix what wasn't broken.
I used longer screws and a small pilot hole for the added length, being careful to go in perfectly straight down the centre and not damage the threads of the existing screw hole.
I think I used a 3/32" bit but not sure exactly without looking at it.
I held the bit up to the screws for comparison and made sure the hole would be slightly smaller than the diameter of the solid part of the screw between the threads.
I think the screws were 2 ½" long and I also seem to recall they were tricky to find so I bought more than I needed so I'd have some for future use.
The screws were pretty tight going in once they bit into the new wood but the buttons do not come loose, even years later.

Sounds like a good idea, though the thought of taking a drill to my guitar makes me very nervous. Im marginally more comfortable with the glue and matchstick trick LOL

Yah, the thought of putting glue and some unknown, very likely far too soft, toothpick wood on my guitar made me queasy but we all have our own unique triggers.
