I had a new pickup installed on my telecaster and the pickup itself is great, I added a 4 way switch and after some confusion the tech finally got it wired the way I wanted. Here is the problem I have with it, when you change positions on the switch there is a rather loud pop that is intermittent. and it is bothersome to say the least, Is this common or is this an internal issue I need to worry about?

Confussed!

Bad solder , bad ground ..? Bad job.

The guy did not do a good job. Return the guitar to him.

Yeah just have it fixed, I have the 4-way switch in my tele and love that added 3rd position, I found myself using it a lot.
Great mod, and no, it shouldn't pop :)

I plan on going to the Fender repair center nearby my home to have them do the wiring repair. Maybe a bad ground issue, for the mod to be correct Seymour Duncan himself posted that you cut the pickup cover ground wire and ground it separately from the pickup itself. My tech soldered the ground wire to the tab on the cover after he filed a spot clean and grounded it with all the other wires to the back of the tone pot, is this wise?

In any event I am not going to take it back to him and have the guitar out of my hands for another 3 weeks. To Fender I go!

Will do, just as soon as I can find my camera. It looks like a war zone!

My tele has the 4 position switch mod. No popping nor noise of any kind when switching. Your installation is faulty.

If you are using a CTS switch (often used by Fender) of an Oak Grigsby switch, your problem is likely a soldering joint.
These are both circular switches.
If you are using a four way switch that looks like a box under the plate, install a CTS or Oak Grigsby switch.

Well after a month of waiting for my Tele, it's finally fixed. I am happy with the mod and the new pickup is great. No more popping or buzzing, it was a faulty tone pot that fender has been using lately and was replaced with a new old stock fender pot. Finally have my baby back. Now for a different amp!
