Personally, I don't like Telecasters with "belly cuts".
It would be politically incorrect for me to say that it is the "bastardization" of the Telecaster, so I won't say that. The "belly cut" and body vibration have no affect on the audible amplified sound of a Telecaster, and it will have no affect on the future value of the guitar, except for people like me, who would choose not own a Telecaster with a "belly cut".

Even when Leo did it? Several G&L ASAT models had contour cut-outs. He corrected many things he considered flaws in the original, and went to a better jack socket, a bridge that would intonate well also with a plain G string, and having a belly cut as an option.

While you can get contours on G&Ls now I'm pretty sure they didn't appear until after Leo died.

Of course Leo had to be coerced into doing the ASAT anyway - Dale Hyatt had them cook up the original prototypes while Leo was out of the office, they didn't show it to him until it was pretty much ready for production approval. Leo never wanted to copy himself; once he saw that the ASAT ("Broadcaster" at that time) was different enough from the Tele he was okay with it.

Thinking about the Strat, P- and J-basses, Jazzmaster, Jaguar - I'd guess Leo didn't leave the Telecaster contourless on purpose, more likely because it opened so many new universes already he didn't have time to consider every playability aspect...

Some people really prefer the contours: Image

Personally (if anyone's interested), I like both. One's real, the other is comfy.

They sound the same.
No difference in value, if the contours are original to the body (not added on, the exception being Mr. Beck's instrument pictured above).

I prefer non-contour. I feel I can "dig in" and play a little harder, faster and more securely. This is totally a "feel" thing, and there's no scientific reasoning behind it.

It doesn't really matter to me, although one with a belly cut should be slightly more bottom-heavy and thus stable.

What I would like to see is a Tele that's slightly thinner, even if it means the neck joint stands out a bit more. The difference in thickness is one of the reasons I like my SG so much.

Another traditionalist but I certainly would't chase you out of my house if you were handing me a contoured Tele. I could see a contoured (and thinner) Tele being somewhat easier to play sitting though, and I'm basing this on when I use my Thinline.

I also agree with the SG poster -- if I have to really "lean in," play fast and complicated chords, I'm reaching for the SG, not a Tele or even a Strat.

I'm old school, I like the original bodies, but I'll play either.

This is one of those choices that require that you throw out logic and reason, and just go play a few of either style. Buy which ever one feel right, and don't look back.

Yah .... I don't get too excited by such debates. It's a matter of personal taste and preference. I am a pragmatist. Whatever works best. I value tradition in guitar building only to a point. I won't sacrifice function for the sake of form. I find the belly cut changes the angle of the plank against my body in a way that suits me. It doesn't matter that the relief isn't actually touching my "belly". It also doesn't matter to me that it's not built "the way Leo intended." It works for me and that's all I care about.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Jeff likes the feel of rosewood fingerboards too.
Of course, he does use a lot of baby powder.
I'm afraid I'm more of a Clapton guy, I guess......
