I have always loved the sound of the Tele and have often thought about getting one but have never been able to "bond" with the instrument. Now I find myself looking again, this time at two used Standard Telecasters: a 2002 and a 2014 which was returned after only a couple of weeks presumably by another Strat guy with Tele-bonding issues. :lol: My questions for the Tele experts in the community is what are the differences between these two models and which one would you recommend to long-time Strat player.

Thanks and Cheers!

I'll just guess you mean US made models and not MIM's - no reason, but I just woke up and it's my first cup of coffee :wink:

In 2002 there was no "American Standard" Telecaster; they called the 2000-2008 models just the "American" Tele, usually referred to as "American series".
The specs, (I colored a few for hihglighting):

The 2014 American Standard specs are the same as on the current models, so they're on the product page

The differences are surprizingly big - body contours, bridge (saddles), pickups, electronics, to name a few of the biggies. Still, they both produce the signature Tele sounds...

I usually don't give answers to "which would fit me better" questions. But, since you're accustomed to Strats, you might like the contoured body better.

Thanks for the detailed reply, jmattis. I remember writing that both models are MIM but obviously this important bit of information got zapped when I "proof read" my post before submitting. Sorry about that.

As for models, I know that the 2014 is a Standard Tele and all I know for sure about the 2002 is that it's a MIM. I don't think it's any special edition or FSR.

Cheers!

" Standard tele " won't help

In 2014 there is a American Standard , American Special just to name a few . There is no Standard...

I'll buy a American made model before MIM if all are original

You can see all these model if you scroll down to Support , Catalogs and prices lists

According to the information I found on the Fender site, there is a model called the STANDARD TELECASTER® (eg. Model #: 0145102502) which I believe is MIM. Both guitars I mentioned are MIM.

Cheers!

Hi, Bluey - sorta guessed you were asking about MIM's, but the changes on those during that period are much less interesting :wink:

The basic construction is the same, some parts of course come from different sources and/or have different part numbers, but in fact this IMHO would simply be a question of those two guitar individuals.

That said, if you haven't bonded with a Tele yet, try a contoured model as I mentioned. Of course, it may just be that a) you don't play indie, or b) aren't yet old enough (Teles come with age limit...). 8)

I've played both guitars and my impression is that the 2014 model has much more spank and twang. It could be the setup (very low action on the 2014), maybe the pickups, or then again I didn't play them side by side so this could all be in the windmills of my mind. :wink:

As for the contoured Tele, I believe the tummy tuck is available only on MIA models after 2012 or so. This brings up another subject so at the risk of hijacking my own thread I'll ask the Tele players how they feel about that. My feeling is that a Tele is what it is and a Strat is what it is. Love them for what they are and don't try to make one more like the other. :D

To my own "bonding issues", you're right that I don't play indie - mostly I play Blues - but I have been around since when JFK was in office so I'm thinking I should be old enough. :-)

Cheers!

I think a triangulation would work best, with a money shot from behind a stack of Marshall Amps, to put an end to the American Standard and American Deluxe Telecaster belly cuts.....
We could get someone from the Fender Ensenada, Mexico plant;
- bring him to the US;
- get a photo of him giving the finger to a belly cut Tele;
- have him hand out leaflets opposing the belly cut-bastardization of the Fender Telecaster, in front of the Fender, Corona, CA plant;
- get him drunk on some good Tequila and place his palm all over the "patsy" rifle......;
- give him a Gibson shirt to wear to NAMM "as a joke";
- have him move some Orange Crate amps At the Fender NAMM location;
- hide the "patsy" rifle behind a bunch of Orange Crate Amps at NAMM, after the "Dirty Deed" has been done...;
- signal the "Dirty Deed" by the playing of AC/DC's, "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)".
"For Those about to Rock----'FIRE'----We salute You...!!!"

I'll weigh in on the belly cut issue. For me a Tele (Standard or American Standard) should not have a belly cut. That's not what a standard Tele is. It's something modified.....something different. Nothing wrong with offering a Tele with a belly cut (I think the Deluxe had it for years), just as there's nothing wrong with offering a Tele with a mini humbucker in the neck position. It's just that this should not be the starting point...the standard.

I can imagine the uproar if the standard Strat came without a belly cut!
