Teles just have an attitude. When you pick one up it expects you to play it without any reservations. I like that.

About 1980 (IIRC), I bought a Squier JV (?..it was Japanese) '52 RI and played that for some years. I fell in love with the '52 as my hero at the time was Keith Richards, and the Stones were riding high with Tattoo You. There was nothing like the feeling of playing 'Start Me Up' with my Squier.

It was later stolen, and after some time it was recovered, but it was beaten to the point where it wouldn't stay in tune anymore (loose neck joint etc.), so I replaced it with a few pointy '80's guitars for a while. The hair metal thing died and I changed to Strats about '92. Recently I acquired an American Vintage '52 Blackguard RI, and oddly enough, it feels like coming home.

I don't know if my memory is skewed regarding the quality of that old Squier, or if the Japanese really tried to produce a quality reissue of a Blackguard Tele. Perhaps some of the more knowledgeable members could enlighten me?

I always wanted a Tele, but had no reason to own one, since I played acoustic music. I was asked to join a country band and the Tele was the only guitar for that job. I'm enjoying the heck out of it.

I'm embarrassed to say that I bought my first one totally on whim. I had bought a purple Jeff Beck Strat from Gruhn in Nashville, and he had an '89 Tele on his site, so I bought it as well a few weeks later. Never had played one before. Heard good things about it, so...

Well, really like it, and it gets a lot of time on the amp. When my lady friend died I was going to play at her funeral while her daughter sang, and I used the Tele. Had the best sound I thought. I won't ever part with it.

Then last year I turned the big 6-0. Damn. Thought I would mark the occasion by buying a 60th anniversary Strat. However, got to the shop and wasn't quite blown away by the Strats that marked the big occasion. Tried a Sonic Blue Tele with the channel bound rosewood board and though it was great, so bought it instead.

And there is a copper coloured Baritone Tele here as well. I'm sure I won't stop at just three.

To me, a Tele is beautifully simple...and simply beautiful!

I'd decided to get back into playing and so I was going to by a guitar for my 50th birthday. I didn't want to spend a lot and ended up with a Guild/DeArmond M-75T GC was dumping at $50 off the already low price. Great guitar and still have it. Then I got this "I've always wanted a 'real' Tele, Strat or LP' GAS thing" but a trip back to GC confirmed: they were all more than I wanted to pay to play in my living room now and then. Fast forward a year.

I'm visiting my parents and on a whim decide to drop into a local music store I'd frequented back in the 60s and 70s when I played full time. The owner sadly had Alzheimer's by then, but his daughter was keeping the shop open. And she just happened to have a Highway 1 Tele sitting there and as a long time customer of her dad, I could have it for the original price. She'd found it in the house along with the original invoice price ... Fender had raised prices twice since, and they were about to go up again. But if I bought the Hwy 1 there and then, I'd get the old price. Didn't require a lot of thought, and that became my first Tele.

So it first it was just opportunity, a certain amount of GAS and never having had a "brand name" in days of old. But I've grown into Teles since then and it's the pure simplicity. What you get out is what you put in. I have one more motive -- way back, my HS era girlfriend always said that if you could;'t play acoustic and sound good, you really could't play guitar. I won't debate that sentiment but I will say that nowadays, I've had some hardcore folkies let me get by sitting in with nothing but a Tele and a very plain amp setting. "Close enough" one of them said "and don't tell the other guys, but I think it adds a little depth to our sound without nudging even slightly in a rock direction. Hey ... I like it ... might get one myself!"

Even on the pre-owned market, prices on Hwy 1 Telecasters
are up there these days!

I have been playing guitar since 1965. I owned, in the past, a couple Gibby Lp's, a '65 335, a Strat and dozens of other guitars.

I never owned a Tele... Until today.

I had planned on a new Les Paul, but I could not find one I liked. I played five Telecasters this morning and left the shop with a new American Deluxe. I went with the Aged Cherry Burst with maple fingerboard. You can play anything on this and it sounds great. Whoa! Wow! Don't think I have ever been this happy.

It's never too late to see the light. Once you play a Tele my friend, it gets in your blood. There's nothing like it. It's such a versatile guitar. By the way, I was in GC not long ago, and almost walked out with the same model you have. It was so tempting. It is a beautiful looking guitar for sure. Enjoy.

Post a pic. At least I can feast my eyes now and then. :D

Thanks! She sounds as great as she looks. I replaced the Mustang amp with a new Super-Sonic 22 yesterday. Sounds even better :)
