I bought my first Tele back in '66 after seeing one of
The Everly Brothers using one. It had a great sound
and feel to it.

I spent a few hours in a store, picking up different guitars and trying them as best I could (with my non-electric experience), and picking the one that felt the best. It happened to be a Telecaster.
Now, many guitars later, there is still a majority of Teles in the house - they just feel less awkward to me than most others, and I love the extra sustain that fewer pickups and string-through-body gives.

What others play doesn't matter. The greatness of guitar heroes doesn't rub off on me whether I play the same guitar as them or wear the same underwear as them. By mimicking a hero, you can never surpass them, and that's aiming too low.

For their classic sound (I'm referring to a standard.)
I really don't care for their 'feel' nor the way they play, but the sound is classic!

Knowing nothing about electric guitars at the time....I loved the sound, I loved the feel (sturdy) and I loved the simplicity of two pickups and the three way switch.

Still love those things.

I agree with Miami Mike. I bought my first Tele in 1967, and I still own it. I switch between playing my American Deluxe Tele and a Gibson ES335. Both guitars are very versatile and sound great.

A tele was my first "REAL" (Non-sears roebuck) guitar in 1970, it was a Blonde Telecaster with a maple neck. I worked my 13 yr old arse off for almost a year scrapping up the dough.

I eventually traded it for a USA stratocaster a few years later (1973), from there I was many years "Tele-less".

Finally grabbed up another standard in the mid 90s.

But alas, dumped that one for the "next shining object" (maybe a Sheraton) only to realize, "darn, I really miss it.." so I bought another USA Standard (Ash body, maple board) in 1998 very nice player, great tele tone...

I will never sell this one, cuz I know I'll regret it. I just love what you can do with these.

I think the same holds true for many of us.

Two pickups instead of three means more sustain for one thing.
And many of us only play one pickup at a time anyhow, because it's less "muddy".
Even some notable Strat players like Ritchie Blackmore disable or lower the middle pickup (or in the case of Eddie van Halen, remove it with a chisel).

There is something primal about a Telecaster. Gibsons look elegant; Stratocasters look sexy and sound beautifully musical; but Telecasters are no-nonsense, raw and unapologetic. You can do a lot with them, but they always mean business.

I've owned several Telecasters over the years.

'80 MIJ '62 Tele Custom: Because Andy Summers played one that looked like it.

Muddy Waters: After playing several Teles, this one sounded raw and dirty. Sadly the bridge pickup died and I ended up selling it.

I began playing guitar when I was in college (late start).
After John Lennon was murdered in December, 1980, I bought an acoustic guitar and a Mel Bay No. 1 chord book, and taught myself to play guitar.

In June,1984, I bought my first Telecaster.
After I heard that all future Fender guitars were going to be made in Japan, I wanted to get a USA model before they were all gone.
Telecasters were less expensive than Stratocasters and I was a big Bruce Springsteen fan, after seeing him twice in a theater in 1978, on the Darkness on the Edge of Town tour, and many times thereafter.
In June, 1984, I got a good deal at a local music shop on a new, 1983, cream and white American Standard Telecaster with a maple fret board: $343.00.

After playing that guitar for many years, I found that I liked the feel of a Telecaster more than any other electric guitar.
I used to own a very nice American Deluxe Stratocaster.
After the initial new guitar buzz, I never played it, always choosing to play one of my Telecasters.
The Strat just doesn't have the balance and feel of a Tele, with its larger head stock, and different body.
Now-a-days, its all about the feel that a Tele offers to me.
And I'm still a fan of the maple fret board.

My first Tele was purchased based solely on looks alone. Back then I felt the Tele was a far better looking guitar than a Strat. I don't think about them in those terms anymore. Now they are a means to an end to me and they both have their own special beauty in my eyes.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I prefer the maple fretboard too.

I bought my first Tele (A '54 MIJ Esquire Reissue) in 1985. I had a great Stratocaster, but I also sat in with a country band from time to time, and felt I needed that Tele twang. I still have that Esquire, and even added a MIJ '62 Tele Custom to the collection. Although I must admit I liked the tone of the '62 the neck was never a favorite (kind of a thick D shape) and I even swapped the Esquire neck to the Custom for a bit but that changed the guitars tone...yep the rosewood vs maple thing and it did make a difference, so back on the rosewood neck went and after a few years of hanging on the wall, I traded it on a SFSR...I think I did ok on that one!

I've never liked the feel of rosewood fretboards.
But I do like the feel of ebony fretboards, and I'd sure like to have one of these.
