But it seems as though Gibson has reversed course again.

I think they have become better with 2016 and "T" models (rumours have it the T stands for "Traditional"). I tried an LP in the store the other day, and was very pleasantly surprised. I don't really want an LP, as I'm conditioned for flattops, but I'm eagerly awaiting the 2016 Firebird T, which isn't in the stores yet.
They might not be back to Kalamazoo quality, but I think they're listening to the customers, and reversing course, prioritizing quality over gimmicks.

One manufacturer still on a downward course seems to be ... Dean. I tried a couple of their newest models, and was not impressed. Worse every year lately, in my opinion.

And Gibson has once again reversed course for 2016 - they now have 2 versions of each of the models made in Nashville under the "Gibson USA" brand (the Les Pauls and SGs). They are:

The "T" Version - back to the 2013 specs (but without the laminated fingerboards): 1 11/16" nut width, regular nut, and regular tuners (locking Grovers on the LP Standard, Kluson keystones on most others).

The "HP" version - these carry forward the 2015 specs like the G-Force tuners, wider neck, metal nut (the titanium replacement one, not the too-soft brass one), etc.

So at least you have a choice.

Epiphone has some sweet models. I have been collecting some of them, and they have all been very nice. I have the Casino Elitist, the Wildkat, the '62 Crestwood RI LE, and just ordered the 339 Pro. :D

For the price, the Epiphones are pretty sweet deals. 8)

When Gibson fully pulls it's head out of it's anus they will off the whole 2015 non-sense altogether. I like the craziness of the LP Standard of 2008 though 2011. I have a 2010 which is sweet as pie with those BB Pros ( people hate or love them ). The asysm. neck is easy to get use to also. I prefer the 60s slim taper. I have two LPs with those kind of neck as well. I'm not a fan of the HP Gibson style. Those that like it God bless you! Different strokes for different folks, just like I like the crazy deviation of the Standard from the 2008-2010 ( A few few of these LPs spilled into 2011, I've even almost purchased one ). I feel Gibson guitars sound wonderful through Fender amps.

Also seemed like it is harder to get any Gibson with 'ebony' fretboard these days. I love my '94 Les Paul Studio w/ ebony but subsequent newer models has since replaced with rosewood. Not that there's anything wrong with it but I just think the Ebony looks awesome on the Paul, not to mentioned (now all of you can agree or disagree) the fretboard also resonates an awesome distinct low-end crunch sound.

It seems that Gibson would use more ebony, considering the troubles that they have had with rosewood.

But their stash of ebony was also seized - they have very little of it right now, so it's only on the big dollar Historic models. If you get the "regular" LP Custom (which is basically made like the LP Traditionals with swiss-cheese weight relief even though they are also made in Gibson's "Historic" shop) it will have a Richlite fingerboard.

The Trads don't have weight relief. They are suppose to be more like the original Standards at least in that sense. They came out in 2008. I have a 2010 Standard which is chambered. I know a bit about LPs I have three of them. The changes they came out with on the Standard in 2008 through 2010 (some spilled over to 2011) was going to tick off many Les Paul people so they also came out with the Traditional with no weight relief. They tried to keep them similar as possible to original Standards, thus the name "Traditional." If and when I get another Les Paul it will be a Traditional.

Weight relief was always debated about the original Traditionals - some sources say "no weight relief"; others say "swiss cheese weight relief". When I bought an LP Standard in late 2008 the dealer told me the Traditionals had the old-style swiss cheese hole weight relief, like Standards had used until 2006 when they first went chambered. This was a fairly large dealer – I got to run the racks that day and they had 5-6 Traditionals and 5-6 Standards on the wall that day (this was First Quality Music in Louisville – they were trying to be the next Sweetwater Sound back around 2006-2012, but since have gone through a serious restructuring and are back to being a parts supplier/banjo builder). I've had 5 LPs over the years, but that was the last one.

I’m not sure what was being done throughout the entire run of the Traditional model because Gibson wasn’t very clear. I do know that the 2013 through 2015 Traditionals were highly marketed as being 100% solid with no weight relief at all but I don't know if that change happened earlier than 2013 - it might have been 2012 when both models were updated from the original 2008 specs. I also know that the new 2016 Traditional does indeed have the old-school swiss cheese weight relief. Now there are some plaintop 2016 Traditional runs showing up at places like Sweetwater that are not weight relieved, but the “regular” version is relieved.

I was using the Traditional as an explanation of those non-Historic LP Custom construction because you can clearly see the swiss cheese hole weight relief in the photos of the 2016s on Gibson's site.
