That transparent white over an ash body with the Mary Kay finish is very very nice. Do I have an ash body?

So should I be concerned with what kind of paint and primer he uses? Can anyone give me any information to pass along to him specific to that? What to avoid. Preserving the tone is definitely a priority.

Any quality automotive paint correctly applied will produce an attractive and durable finish on a guitar. And trust me -- your amp won't know the difference between nitro-cellulose lacquer, acrylic enamel, or polyurethane.

Thank you! So excited!! Should I stop sandi g or continue with the 200 then 230. How fine should I go before stopping? I bring it to him tomorrow and want it as prepped as possible. I plan on masking the cavities. Agreed?

I'm not a refinisher nor have I ever attempted such an endeavor (I send such jobs out to a professional luthier) but I'm thinking you should probably take it to at least #360 or perhaps #400.

Others here on this forum have done refinishing (some quite successfully) so perhaps one or more of them will weigh in with their observations and recommendations.

You're wrong.

And for the record, not all of the guitars built in the pre-CBS era were finished in nitro-cellulose.

Look it up.

Is that typical guitar paint or something special? What do you think the auto guy will use I'm going to?

Most musical instruments constructed primarily of wood (pianos, violins, lutes, mandolins, guitars, etc) were finished in nitro-cellulose because prior to the 1960's, organic-based products were the only game in town. This type of lacquer dries quickly, wet-sands easily, and polishes out to produce a gorgeous glossy finish. However, it is extremely labor-intensive to apply and it out-gases several noxious byproducts as it cures. Those are the reasons why auto companies and guitar manufacturers abandoned it. It has in fact been banned in many states.

As for what type of finish your painter will use, clairvoyance is not among the assets in my skillset. Call him up and ask him.

As to the sanding...I would keep sanding and make the back curve deeper and the right arm rest thinner more like a 57 Strat...the deeper curves are much more comfortable IMHO.

Just a thought since refinishing hasn't started yet.

Awesome. Glad to hear I can keep sanding. I'll take your advice on making it more comfortable.

Thanks for the info too on the paint history. I'm going to find out. Sounds like he'll likely be using paint safe for my guitar plus he's doing his research too.

Well I sanded as much as I could. Bringing the guitar to the painter on the way home from work tomorrow. I taped up the cavities. Let me know if this is a bad idea or the right thing to do. I know there's a protective coat in the cavitiesfor the electronics so I didn't want to ruin that by having him paint over it.
