Hi
Just wondering if anyone with an EC model (lace sensors or noiseless) has ever measured the DC resistance when the midboost is full on? It's supposed to emulate a humbucker, although we know it gives a 12db boost, but does it also increase the DC, like a real humbucker?

I believe the maximum available boost is 25 dB.

Although I have never measured them, I have the lace sensors in my EC Strat and they do approximate a humbucker sound wise, however it is not true humbucking tone, it sounds a bit brighter.

I too, have the EC Strat with Lace Sensors. The sound gets thicker. Ir I really want a more HB tone, I turn the tone knob down. The TBX control past 5 makes it much brighter than the standard tone knob.

The thought came to me cause I just switched my Lace sensonrs (no midboost) for some hot rails and the sound is amazing, wondering why EC never switched. I've tried the midboost and I found it too crunchy, not a real humbucker sound

Glad you are digging the new hot rails, they remind me of a less expensive version of Joe Bardens! As for EC not making the change...Rule #1 EC can do no wrong!

The MDX circuit on the EC Strat gives 25dB as opposed to 12dB on the Elite for which several signature models are based on. To restore the gain to the original Elite specs you must add a pair of resistors in the boost pot.

I stand corrected, although 25 seems like a lot, I was wondering about the DC resistance, does it change when the boost is engaged?

'Cuz Mike Eldred didn't send Eric new 'hot rails' to try out. He sent him the new "Vintage Noiseless' pickups Fender had developed. It's been that way over 20 years now. Bear in mind that the circuitry for that guitar is balanced so that the pickup output can handle the gain of the mid-range boost. Pickups in active circuits are a tad 'laid back' for that reason. Clapton's stage guitars do not have the TBX pot. They have a conventional tone pot likely due to the observations made by others regarding the TBX {treble/bass cut}.

I'm aware, but EC can certainly use what he'd like. Personally, I hate the Noiseless, not only for him, I tried them and found them harsh and sterile. Seeing that EC wanted a humbucking sound in a Strat, something that can be split like a hot rail could do the trick. Funny though, how his personal guitars dont have the tbx but the artist models do...

Because the artist specified the features for the respective production lines.

Teambuilts initially came with an old 250K pot but Eric changed his mind in 2009 specifying the guitars sharing the same circuit found on the standard production line and retaining the normal tone for the Masterbuilts.

We've been trying to figure that one out since 2007 when these Forums first saw the light. The tone's from Eric's guitars have been decidedly different since 1988, and a tad less throaty with the VN's that with the Laces. What his ear hears that a conventional tone pot offers, none of us can say. [You might look into Premier Guitar's archives for a three part article on the Physiology of Tone...about 3-5 years back.] The other thing we've never been priviledged to is precisely how he EQ's his amps and precisely how much influence the sound board has in that as well. The source of all of that will always be his hands, and Eric will sound like Eric regardless of what he is playing.
