I believe the the chrome covers on humbuckers are part of the PUP, it certainly was on the only guitar I had with such things. Good news, Strats with HSH don't have chrome covers.

As far as modifications the list is almost infinite. So much better to buy a guitar you are happy with in the first instance if you can aford it.

Most modifications either come about through having a guitar you like but changing something will make it better for you. Or, not being able to afford the guitar you would like but changing parts on a cheaper guitar gets you close to the same result.

Either way, like string choice, it is a personal thing so not some thing you could really give advice on as a catch all.

The best tips I know on a new guitar and new guitar model are:
1. Have it set up by a good pro.
Have him/her/it set it to your own preferences, if you have them, otherwise to a. factory recommendations or b. the tech's "best possible" setup for your music genre(s).
2. Give it a year (or so) of "constant" (or so) playing before starting mods.
You'll learn the guitar and how it handles with your pedals, amp and playing style, and you might have an idea what needs to be changed (if anything - the HSH is about as versatile as you can get).

Some chrome covers come off humbuckers easy, some you have to desolder, some you just gotta leave alone. But, as mentioned by JS above, the Standard HSH has open coil pickups.

On my PC screen, and in the guitar's specs, the pickups are "Dual Blacktop open-coil humbucking neck and bridge pickups with chrome/black bobbins"; link Standard Strat HSH
If you compare those pups to e.g. Classic Player Strat HH, the difference to chrome covers is clear.

Bobbins are just about impossible to take off (well, it's possible but don't). Just deal with those few cm2's of bling - or color them black with a permanent MagicMarker pen
And: play on, play LOUD.
