Yes what Arjay said. Most people would read the comments and respond to them at least to thank them for their help. I have seen several posts over the years on different forums from people claiming to cleaning out a closet of a "dead" relative and it ends up being a fake or partscaster a high percentage of the time. Always just one post with no follow up . Coincidence ? Maybe , but it seems like someone testing the waters to me. Claims not to be an "enthusiast " but joined in 2007 and waited until now to make their first post? Hmmm.

Indeed.

That itself is cause for scrutiny and suspicion.

Fair comment. It does seem strange that someone would be a member of this forum for 8 years and yet only post now. And I agree that it is rather discourteous to ask for assistance and then not comment further. :-(

The OP also posted this over on Strat-Talk; he engaged with the people over there and provided more photos when asked. I suppose he felt he got his questions answered through the interactions over there, and when he didn't see anything different he never posted here again.

A single post by the owner of this guitar almost gives the impression in trolling for prospective buyers...

...or is it just me that thinks this?

:? :?:

Like JC wrote, the guitar has been under multipage discussion on that other forum

As a summary: the neck is suspected to be a MIJ, the body either a Tokai or ?, and likely refinished. So, Partscaster is the general belief, and many questions remain unanswered. Like, didn't notice a pic of the neck pocket.

Just my own $.02 but I have to agree that my general feeling is that this was some kind of fishing scam. Even with the multi-page dialog on the other forum, the person stopped posting once someone told them the guitar might be worth $400 to $500 (one person suggested more for the "right buyer")...and on the other forum, the OP seemed more concerned about whether people thought the instrument was some kind of "gem" rather than specific facts. I noticed in both forums the OP was careful to avoid images that could positively identify the instrument (such as neck heel/neck pocket images) and that the shot of the headstock was blurred just enough so you can't tell if the logo was replaced and even the extra images that were provided are somewhat.err...elusive. Clearly there's an issue with the trem cover and the shots of the bridge saddles that clearly show Tokai stand in contrast to the Fender headstock logo. The age and tarnish on the bridge certainly isn't consistent with the rest of the gold hardware...I might even question the amount of tarnish on the pickguard screws compared with the pickup screws...one might suspect the pickups have been replaced (anyone notice the globs of solder on the output jack?). I haven't looked to be sure, but I think those tuners look identical to the GF tuners I put on my '93 MIM a while back. And while I'm not 100% sure, the 12th fret dot spacing looks off to me as well...not as far apart as Squier, but not as close together as Fender.

The instrument is certainly a partscaster at the very least...just way too many inconsistencies to be anything else, but I get the impression the person was simply looking to see how much he could get away with...how many people noticed how many flaws. Wouldn't surprise me to see it pop up on Craigslist in a few weeks...we've gotten quite a few of those in the past 6 months or so here in the Cleveland area (including a number of GF parts that were being passed off as genuine Fender...as far as I know, Fender never made any pawlina bodies). There was one guy down in the Akron area a while back that was trying to pass off an otherwise ordinary looking Strat as a $4500 Custom Shop instrument...when I asked about the lack of a COA, he got volatile and threatening.

In any case, again just my own $.02 and I could certainly be wrong, but I really get the impression this person was just testing the proverbial waters.

I stopped reading the thread on the other forum when it degenerated into a bitch-fest between 2 members over there so I didn't know when the OP checked out.

Either way it's a typical post for someone who doesn't play who winds up with a guitar - when it's confirmed to not be what they thought it was then they check out. I don't think it was necessarily fishing for a sale here - it was more to set up their craigslist ad and if it did generate interest on a forum then that would just be the icing on the cake to them. They were never going to play or engage in discussions long-term.
