It's not really a Time Machine '66; it looks like it is what the dealer says - a custom run with different specs but based on the '66. So basically it's whatever the hell they wanted to order with the basic physical look of the '66: the large headstock, gold transition logo, etc. Not the greatest shots, but that does look like how they did the leftys - just the Fender logo. Also I recall the 2-3 Time Machine '66s I tried out back in the day as having the F tuners - which I believe Fender did start using during 1966 (and also it made the CS Time Machine '66 model a bit less redundant with the '65 model).

You don't see many of the Time Machine '66s around; they didn't sell as well as the others and was dropped.

Yep JC that is interesting.
Just goes to show nothing is cast in stone.
Nickel plated klusons till 67.
The three 66 time machines that have passed thru my hands including the one I still own have klusons.
I know the frontline 2006 says f types but it could be wrong in some cases :D

If the seller himself isn't truly sure of what he has, it should raise a big red flag. If there is conflicting information on the COA, the instrument model's real and advertised specs, and the info Fender should be able to provide, I would definitely reconsider the decision to purchase. With all of these factors combined, I would just stay away. "Danger!, Danger, indeed, Will Robinson!"
Keep looking. Like I said, there are still lots of Strats, even Lefty Strats, out there. At least this dealer was honest enough to let you know things didn't look right.

OK, I talked to Fender today and they were able to give me a good bit of info. I feel sort of guilty putting all of this out where it could possibly reflect poorly on the dealer. He has been a great person deal with over the years as evidenced by my purchase and trades of 5 or 6 guitars from him with no problems. I have also never read an online complaint or concern from anyone else. Also I should point out that he was out of town and not in his shop when he was giving me the info off the top of his head. When he got back to the shop is when he reviewed the COA and emailed me the corrections.

Anyway... Fender Customer Support guy was great over the phone and took some time to get the specific info. He said that “2006 was a wonky time period” for records (backing up what the dealer said). His comments were:
It is a "real" guitar, built for the dealer to his specs. It is NOS and a mix of '65 and '66 features i.e. 65 Strat but 66 logo. He said that there were a lot of one-off things about it but it was something the dealer designed and wanted. They have no record of it being sold to anyone but the dealer which supports it being a "new" guitar.
He said that it has vintage style tuners and assumes them to be Kluson style but wasn’t exactly sure. It was strung with 10’s when built. He couldn’t tell if it had the large headstock but I think the pictures show it. Vintage ‘65 pickup, single coils, Alnico 5 magnets.

Here is the info list he sent me. I had to add some tabs to break it apart. Not sure if I did it correctly but you more knowledgeable folks can figure it out I’m sure….

All that being said, I think I am passing on this guitar simply because it is an odd duck and a lefty. Not a good combo for someone who may want to move on to something else later on. If I had it in my hands to play and fell in love with it then it would be a different story but... I don't and can't so. Also, someone with my skills would probably be over spending by moving from a Standard to an American Deluxe much less a $3,000 guitar. However, curiosity has taken over on this so I have a couple of questions. 1) The pics do show the large headstock correct? 2) Can you tell from the pics if those are Fat 50's or the Vintage pickups?

Again, thanks for all the great info and help!

A pretty detailed list of features which would seem to confirm the guitar's bonafides.

It may be an odd configuration but it is genuine Fender.

If you like it, grab it. Likely you'll never see another one like it.

True but is that a GOOD thing or is it just an odd duck with decreased value due to it's weirdness? Also, would any of these things have any impact whatsoever on the basic sound/tone..the "Fenderness" of the guitar? I don't think so but I'm just a newbie...

Glad you got to the bottom of it.
Yes it is an oddball particularly being a lefty as well
Should you buy a guitar either to recoup costs or make money later ... no.
Are you happy with your Gibson?
Can you justify the expenditure?
Remember it is kinda vintage so does not have the modern touches like compound radius, locking tuners etc but there is nothing wrong with that!
If it is a good strat you may enjoy it for a lifetime and in turn you may want to play more which is a good thing.
Do you think the dealer might let you try it on appro?

Yes, not looking to make money later or even break even. Just thinking about the "what if" I wanted to sell it at any price how hard it would be. No way around that it would be harder to sell than a standard model. Can I try it out? I can ask but I am trading my Gibson LP in on it so it gets complicated if I just want to back out. Not sure but again, he has always treated me fairly. About the only "complaints" are that he is grumpy at times and maybe a little high priced on things. Always will to negotiate down in the past. Truth be told what attracted me to this Strat in the first place was simply the look of it. Again, buying a guitar like this sound stupid to you guys but its the life of a lefty!

If you've developed a rapport with the dealer and prior negotiations with him have been both amicable and successful, he should be more than willing to accommodate your wish to take that Strat for a "test drive" before finalizing your purchase decision.

If in doubt...don't. Such a purchase can go only one of two ways:-

a) You build a rapport with the guitar and it is buried with you.

b) You never get over the doubt as to whether you should have bought the guitar and eventually sell it at a spectacular loss. Not only are lefties harder to come by their are far fewer people to sell them to.

For less money you could get your very own specification guitar through Fenders configurator.

When I clicked on your link and went to the page the description says 1965. I checked the link but it says 1966.... probably a typo on their end ..... it's a '65.

After I talked to the dealer he checked the COA and corrected the listing to reflect the correct year. I still haven't bought anything... I'm not sure which I like better, looking and deciding what to buy or actually owning and playing..!
