I noticed something interesting.

I always knew that Fender made strat pickguards with two different screw patterns:

The classic 8 screw, which we can easily spot on 50s designed guitars:

And the 11 screw, on later designs:

Note that the placement of the screw hole that is between the middle and bridge pickup, on the right, is slightly different.

So, I was taking a look at tortoise pickguards and noticed that there is actually a third pattern, with the 11 holes, but with that one above the switch, like an 8 hole guard:

Does anybody know when this third pattern was created and which models featured it first? I often see it in Squiers and other budget models, but some Fenders do have them. My 1994 CAR Southern Cross for instance.

I don't have any clue but I know there's another important one, 11 screws with one of the upper screws centered in between the middle and neck pickups. That's the 1962 styled pickguard, have a look at 62 reissues for reference...

1959 brought several changes to the screw number and configuration.
Here's an 8 screw

a 10 screw

1959 11 screw - this configuration was used until early 1963

Here's an early '63

and a later '63

by 1964 the configuration had settled to the familiar 11 hole

Check the Fender catalog which lists four variations of the SSS pickguard, 8 hole '57, 10 hole '59, 11 hole '62 with truss rod cut out and 11 hole modern
