Before getting my American Deluxe I thought the contoured heel - like the S1 switch, and locking tuners - would be an "upgrade" from the American Standard model. After playing it for a few years now I can't say that the contoured heel has an advantage. I'm just as comfortable high up on the neck with the contoured heel as I am with the traditional heel.

Of course this is a case of different strokes for different folks so those who have or played both the traditional and contoured heel, do you have a preference?

Cheers!
BM

Yes, my preference is for a contoured heel. I have no problem with a normal heel, but anything that makes my playing more fluid is an advantage to me. So, if I had a choice between two identical guitars except for the heel, I would pick the contour heel. Vintage correct I'm not.

I prefer the contoured heel too.
I don't have a problem negotiating up at the dusty end of the neck with a traditional heel, but the contoured heel has a nicer feel.

My son's guitar feels even nicer at the dusty end, because it has a sculpted heel area
