While doing some recording tonight I was playing my bandmates new AV 56 Strat. I noticed an unusual buzz that I hadnt heard before. I pluged in a different guitar and it was gone. I couldn't believe a new $2,000 + instrument would have a problem, but after going through the whole, differant cord, guitar, and amp thing ,we confirmed the noise was from the strat. He bought the guitar 2nd hand from someone who wanted to learn to play(start with the best I guess). He apparently hardly took it out of the case, nothing really disturbed, even had the receipt with it. It was bought 1 year ago (I don't know if the warranty is still good). Any ideas of what to look for? Should we send it back to Fender? I dont have much faith in the techs I have found here in Vegas (anyone know a good one?) If it was just any old instrument I would open it up and check out the connections and pots. For me it's hard to open an untouched piece like this , just feels irreverent. I welcome any comments.

Assuming a problem with a patch cable or amp has been ruled out, I would inspect all the wiring beneath the hood, under the jack ferrule, and within the trem cavity and look for any marginal solder joints. Re-heat any connections that appear loose or "cold".

First things first; the "buzz". Do you mean an electrical type noise, or something like string buzz?
On the latter, has the guitar been set up (including new strings...)?
On the first, the guitar should be covered by the Fender warranty, so my advice would be to take the guitar to a Fender authorized dealer.

Electrical buzz that varies as you move around the room, like RF noise.

+1 on bad grounding. Does it stop or change intensity alternatively touching and releasing metal parts on the guitar like strings, bridge, jack output socket?
Always present or only in some position of the switch?

You mentioned other guitars - were any of them single coil guitars? Was this a really bad 60 cycle hum or something else?

Remember these are "vintage accurate" so they are shielded like the originals, not like modern guitars and will be more prone to the 60 cycle hum than say an American Standard. If it's something more than 60 cycle hum then the others are on the right track with grounding, shielding or a bad/microphonic pickup.

This sounded like a grounding thing to me , the other guitar was modern. I never thought about the vintage issue. That's why I like this place, I post one night and have several insightful answers the next day, you all are the best.
We decided to take it to the authorised Fender shop. ( I told my friend that if he was the skipper, I was gilligan and maryann was cooking coconut cream pies I would open it up and fix it. But in this case he should take it to a pro.
Thanks for the help.

I have an AVRI '56 Strat that I bought new as soon as they came out back in 2012. Great guitar. It's my personal favorite. I sometimes get a pretty intense 60 cycle hum out of it though. I was doing a gig earlier this year and the hum was almost unbearable. I thought something was wrong with my amp because, while the 60 cycle hum was common, it had never been that bad before. I tried different cables, etc... I was really afraid this was something more than just the usually single coil hum.

I took my gear home after the gig and plugged in at home to the same amp with the same cables and so forth and the buzz was gone. Why did I have such a severe electrical noise at that particular gig? Not sure. Could have been the wiring in the venue or interference from lights, other amps, whatever. The point I'm making is that you can sometimes get a pretty intense 60 cycle hum from a vintage-correct Strat or Tele. Out of probably 50-60 gigs that I used that guitar for, I only had that one particular show when the buzz was so bad that it caused problems for me. The rest of the time, it's pretty manageable and often not that noticeable.

+1

Using a power conditioner such as a Furman might help.

Fender Warranty LOL! Have you seen the warranty? I see everything that Fender does not cover and am left wondering what they do cover! LOL. One thing that voids the warranty is when the guitar is sold from the original owner. But still a knowledgeable Authorized Fender Service Center one would hope would be able to handle the issue. That might be a good place to start.
