I have not given it a thought earlier - now I've suddenly noticed that only the HSS deluxes are equipped with a LSR roller nut. How come ?
I mean - if the roller nut is regarded the best- wouldn't the SSS ones benefit from it, as well ?

It's been that way since 1998; prior to that the Lace Sensor models (Strat Plus, Strat Plus Deluxe and Strat Ultra) all had roller nuts.

When the American Deluxes replaced those models the powers that be thought that there was a backlash against things like the Lace Sensor pickups, roller nuts, etc. so they made the SSS models a bit more vintage-y. The thought was that the HSS models were the "hard rock/metal" models, and the players would be more prone to whammy bar gymnastics.

For a brief while in 1998 you could only get the roller nut on the HSS models with the deluxe locking trem unit; the HSS models with the regular deluxe tremolo had a regular nut. That lasted only a brief while (not even the first year) before all HSS models got the roller nut.

I don't know that the roller nut is necessarily "better", but it is supposed to hold the tune better under heavier trem use.

I ordered a new bass bridge and when it came in I noticed that it had roller saddles. Not sure of the reasoning behind it but haven't had any tuning issues or broken any strings.

You mean - you like oranges better than apples ?????

I'm not claiming to know the roller nut is best- just wondered for what reason some deluxes have it , and some don't.
John C explains it very well. That goes fine with some of my own thoughts ; the ''HSS-people'' may be regarded as dive-bombing heavy rockers.
Recently I bought a deluxe with a shawbucker . Reasons were
1.The compound neck
2.Noiseless pups
3.Shawbucker (to add a bit more ''spank'' when needed)
4.Locking tuners/roller nut (to provide best possible use of the trem)
In addition I could finally get a Fender with a rosewood fingerboard , which I've never had before :)

Thanks for clearing up my speculations 8)

I do not know anything about that , I think you're right about the tuning stability, perhaps also saving strings from breaking
