Hi there,

Want to get the strat with Floyd Rose tremolo system. And my choice is quite hard, and it lies between two options: upgrade my existing Modern Player HSH strat (http://intl.fender.com/en-RU/series/spe ... ansparent/) with FR, or buy a new Standard FR Strat (http://intl.fender.com/en-RU/series/sta ... ue-no-bag/), having sold the Modern Player guitar.

If I go for the option 1, I will have the following pros:
- No need to buy a new guitar, just a tremolo unit.
- I'm quite good at woodworks, also one of my best friends is a professional luthier, so I can do the upgrade for free, or for a very small amount of money.
And cons also:
- Such modification is done only once, it will be impossible to turn the guitar back to it's initial state.

If I choose the option two, there will be following pros:
- No need to do any woodworks, the Standard FR model is ready for use and set up at the factory.
And cons:
- Need to sell the Modern Player and to add extra money for Standard model, they cost about $500-700.

What would you do, if you were me?

In fact, I still have following question: will the Standard be the a step up in terms of quality of the guitar itself, comparing to the Modern Player, or these model are quite similar, and there is no sense to swap one with another? This MP is quite good guitar, but I have not had a chance to compare it 'head to head' with Standard model. Who had such a chance?

Thanks.

There's an alternative solution: drop in a Mini Floyd bridge assembly with LSR Roller Nut and staggered lockers, there's no need to perform major surgery in your favorite guitar.

Too bad, Fender no longer sells this product. :x

Any destructive modification can potentially devalue the guitar dramatically, and there is no guarantee you will actually prefer the guitar afterwards. What do you do then?

Even if the modification is successful, you are less likely to get a buyer for the modified guitar than in its original form.

Either fit one of the bridges which is a staight substitution, and can therefore be reversed; or get the new guitar.

I'd go for option 3
Buy the new guitar and keep the old one.
Nah seriously! :D

Is there anything special about 2015? I'm looking at 2012 Standard now. Are 2015 better?

Yes, in my opinion pre-2015 MIM guitars are dark sounding (I checked out 17 of them) -- some of them are really beautiful sounding, but dark -- which kills it. Finally that seems to be fixed this year.

Ive owned the Standard Strat Locking Trem ('08 model) and I couldn't bond with it. If you are looking for a strat that is a hot rodded version, then I don't think that guitar is the best choice. The HSS Locking strat is just a standard strat with a Floyd rose- thats all. If the name on the headstock isn't an issue, Id check out the Charvel So Cal or the San Dimas, or the EVH guitars.

They are made in the same factory as the MIM strat, but what you get is: EVH, Seymour Duncan or Dimarzio pickups, compound radius fretboard, quarter-sawn maple neck with oiled finish and jumbo frets. The EVH series beef it up with a non-recessed trem, strap locks and a D-tuna. in comparison to the standard strat with floyd, it is pretty good value.

I sold my standard to buy a Charvel San Dimas and in my opinion it is a far better guitar. The pickups aren't the best in that strat and the little frets with the vintage radius didn't do it any justice at all.

+1!

Unless a skilled luthier do professionally the job for you without all the hassles that could potentially harm your instrument.

Best advice is to ask an expert tech for the mods, leave your axe stock or purchase another guitar having similar features.

I agree. There seems to be a current obsession in making the Strat all things to all people. I don't think this is right and is just a way for Fender to sell more guitars.

Strats are iconic and renowned for their sound and look in original SSS form - which they do brilliantly. Anything else is just a bastard child of a bad idea and too great a compromise to do anything well.

Yeah I agree- they (fender) used to have some good options in the 90's which OP would have found exactly the right strat- now there isn't much choice- apart from retrofit a Floyd Rose on an American Special Strat..

Here's my San Dimas- JB in the bridge and '59 in the neck, compound radius, 22 jumbo frets, non-recessed Floyd Rose Special, Grover machine heads..

And here's the strat I sold prior: standard pickups, vintage frets (small), vintage radius.. only thing better is the fact that it has a better bridge than the San Dimas- but thats barely worth a mention though, not a deal breaker.
