IIRC the limited-edition aluminum Strat bodies were not milled from a solid ingot of alloy -- they were pieced together from pre-cut sheet stock and MIG/TIG welded into the familiar form then finally shaped by grinding and filing. Thus, I don't think they're "solid" in the traditional sense -- not sure how such a construction would affect the sustain of the instrument.

Hmmm. I have no way of knowing, but it seems like an all aluminum body on a Strat would be twangy as hell ?

It would go a long way towards kinda answering...or extending...the "tone wood" question. :?

From these photos it appears as though a "chassis" fabricated from aluminum extrusion is used to provide structural rigidity, with extra reinforcements located at all the critical stress points......

Technically, that might qualify the guitar as a "hollow body".

It's a Custom Shop Masterbuilt So-Cal Strat which became the basis for the regular production Speed Shop models with the single AlNiCo humbucker in the bridge. This one-off was crafted by Dave "Red" Nichols in 2003.

The Limited Edition So-Cal Speed Shop Strat was introduced in 2005 and discontinued in 2006.

My software suggests a solid aluminium body would weigh 26 lbs - That would certainly introduce some interesting sonic properties and discourage people from stealing it.

Those (Made in Korean) pop up in ebay from time to time. "Buy it now" price $550 plus $150 UPS-shipping, for a 2004 (so the ad says) guitar, if anyone's interested. I sorta like it, but what kind of music could one play with it, with credibility..?

Looks to me like two pieces of stamped aluminum welded to a frame of bars. However the width of the bit around the neck does suggest its extruded, though its really hard to tell. It sure looks cool, if a bit heavy, its really a work of art.
My first guitar was a Peavey T 60, it was really heavy, sounded fairly good, had a good bit of sustain. I had a friend in the 70's who had a guitar with an aluminum neck with wood laminated around it , weighed a ton but sounded good, can't remember the make, possibly a VOX, I'm sure someone here knows.

paraphrasing a quote I remember from Les Paul " he best sustaining guitar is strung between to anvils" Heavy rock baby :D
