What do you guys make of this? I might have to get a PRS now. My two favorite guitarist (John Mayer and Carlos Sanatana) are on their roster. Well....John WAS a favorite during the Continuum years.... Let's discuss.....

I rather have the hots for a Bernie Marsden signature. I am impressed that he insisted it was of the cheaper (non US) build to make it more accessible.

I assume Fender will continue to produce John Myers while ever they sell. They have done the hard work in establishing the specification. I don't know what the contractual situation is between Fender and the signature artist but assume it would be a royalty on each one sold.

John Mayer's contract with Fender is over; I'm sure they provided a deadline for dealers to place final orders, so the ones showing up at dealers right now are the last of them. Also some dealers have bought out the stock of other dealers, so they are showing up some places as "demos".

Interesting...

Although I like Gibson and PRS, I never felt "inclined" to buy a guitar because my favorite artists play this or that...

I am a Zep fan all the way and I really dig les pauls, but I play my zep cover stuff with my two Fenders (which Jimmy eventually played when he recorded some of the band's scores...), and John Mayer may play whatever guitar he pleases, I'll listen and enjoy any way.

The guitar John played at MSG is a black NF3.

Personally I've never seen him playing floyded Jacksons :| he apparently chose the pink Soloist after saw Jeff Beck playing a similar guitar at the ARMS charity shows in 1983.....

Spooky how you never see Jeff Beck and Nigel Tufnel together.

Sorry, I know it's off thread, but it just appealed to me.

Just MHO,

I buy and play the guitars that for one reason or another * I AM * interested in playing/owning.

I couldn't care less what even the most important influences to me are playing. These guys don't pay for ANY of the guitars they "Endorse" and most of these guys have HUNDREDS of guitars from all manufactures.

all of this is purely Marketing Hype, and usually, nothing more.

if you want a PRS, just go out and buy one!

I'm not sure that is the case. Bernie Marsden does at his workshops and has on stage on occasion (according to his interview with Lee Anderton https://youtu.be/L6V8htfnkvc ).

I consider there is perhaps a starting point if a guitarist you respect has had an influence in a guitar. But it is only a starting point.

I did find myself pondering a Jimmie Vaughn signature guitar earlier today despite deciding I wouldn't buy another MIM. And I keep coming back to considering a mid tone boost circuit, because of EC, despite not liking active electronics.

I am sure there are fan boys who must have the guitar because it has a link to their idol, and I am sure we are all guilty of considering gear specs when chasing that elusive tone even if it isn't relative to a signature model.

[edit] My bad - I read that as don't play any of the guitars they endorse.......They certainly wouldn't pay for the guitar - why would they when they have been involved in developing it and are helping to sell it as a result. It may even be a cheap copy of a guitar they already own (and probably paid for in the first place) Why would they buy one?

Remember all that business we had with the Mayer guitars back about five years ago??. Uffff!!! These artist 'guitar ho's' will go where the money is. Bonamassa swore off Fender, made a killing with Gibson. Now, in Guitar Player mag, he's touting a clutch of Strats he acquired and he's using them on stage for certain songs. I'll leave Santana out of this. He's settled in and been with them for years now. I've owned two PRS's. Awesome guitars. They don't build a neck carve that suits my left hand. I wish I could have a Clapton neck on everything Fender makes. I'm not paying them a king's ransom for a custom carved neck, either. I've 5 Strats that work for me and you can play 'em anytime you can tear yourself away from new young'un of yours.

I definitely agree with this, but in reality the # of "artist signature guitars" from Fender and Gibson (IMHO) is twice to three x what I think it should be, so I take most of this stuff with the obligatory grain of salt.

I've been at this too long I guess to be sucked in to the whole ordeal.

but at the end of the day, I'm certainly no marketing genius, I'm just one of those that don't really buy into this, or the artificial relicing craze.

I also like Vanilla ice cream!!

I've owned a Bernie since 2012. For the money, it's one of the most satisfying axes I own. Highly recommended.

I'm not sure if that is a help or not. If you had said it was rubbish I could have removed it from my wish list.

Nice Doc! I am moving away from Mayer because there is no musical content. I want a PRS because they are gorgeous guitars as far as music listening related to the axe..I'm going backwards Pink Floyd, Jimi, EC, etc.

With the expanded line, you certainly have a wider range of choices. 20 years ago, when I bought my first one, such was not the case.
