I was on a quest for a surf green strat. Had some ideas putting together something based on the MIM then got distracted by a fake. Found this beauty at Willcutts. They had a NOS AVRI 57 Strat iin surf green (I love vintage speced guitars) so here is a pic with my 59 Journeyman relic Custom Shop. The 57 is a fine guitar . Loved the neck and the way it feels and sounds. Really impressed with the 57/62 pickups.[img][/img]

Thanks , I suck at posting photos. I love the 57 AVRI . Its too bad they discontinued it. I probably will install the 5 way switch . I use those 2 and 4 positions a lot.

Hey congrats.
I love NGD pics.
To me the 57/62 pickups give that definitive strat sound.
How does it compare to the 59? :D

Well the AVRI 59 has custom shop 50s (not fat 50s) and the CS 59 has hand wound 59s. I would say the 57/62s sound rounder and thicker than the others , but the CS has a bit more chime and quack than the 57/62 s. All are great pickups, just different flavor really.

Sweet.

There is quite a contrast between the colour of the plastic bits and the scratch plate. I think I'd be tempted to change one or the other to get a closer match.

That is how they age naturally. I have seen pics of older ones where the pickup and knobs were darker than the pickgard.

Congrats on the new guitar, and both of those are beauties. I really like the aesthetics of the maple fretboard with the surf green, that really sets it off.

Indeed. But, assuming the old knobs were polystyrene wouldn't the pickguard be a Celluloid nitrate which goes that aged green colour?

As I recollect, the single-ply pickguards used from '54 to '58 were plastic (excepting the gold anodized-aluminum examples). Celluloid nitrate became the standard material for pickguards only when the 3-ply laminated type was introduced.
